2002 ranger 3.0L hits 3200rpm then miss fires and bogs down. wont pass that rpm. no trouble lights have come on. does it in drive, neutral, park, cold or hot it does it all the time. any ideas i'm lost on this one and i really need my vehicle.
First things first. Drop by your local auto parts store and have them pull the codes for you. Most will do it for free. Bring the code numbers themselves back here, that helps a LOT in specifying the problem.
Did this just come outta the blue or did it gradually get worse?
Humm. There is a rev limiter set to about 3k, it only limits in park and netrual. I wonder if it somehow thinks its not in drive and is limiting it???
Dave
My first thoughts were rev limiter too Dave, but after thinking about it some, could be a fuel flow problem also, like maybe a clogged fuel filter, or fuel pressure problem, ie pump or regulator.
So I also like Zach's idea to get the codes pulled & see if the computer will tattle on something!!!!
ya id have to agree with the "thinks its in nuetral" or fuel filter... unless the 3.0 still has a distributor i know it was the last to get the coil pack in some cars but dont know the year BUT if it does have a distributor you may be lookin at a coil... and just because there isnt a light on doesnt mean theres no codes..
My first reaction was also the same as Daves. In this case, and I might be going out on a limb here, I'd suspect a fuel delivery issue. On that note I'd first check fuel pressure and take a shot at fuel filter replacement, especially if it's been on there for 60,000+ miles.
this just occurred the day after i went through a mud puddle on my way home. no codes came up. it does have a coil pack. still choking out at 3200rpm. disconected MAF sensor out of curiosity no change in performance acts the same but shifts harder. found a little mud in filter box above the filter. engine is also pinging like the timing is out but thats all controlled by computer. not sure of fuel filter bought used not sure when changed last. i'll test fuel pressure tomarrow i think it's supposed to be 13psi not sure new to some of these new sytems haven't turned a wrench since 1999 except classic rebuilds.

well the problem with "checking" the fuel pressure is you need to check it at the point it runs bad so you either need to power brake it or drive with the gage taped to the window or something so you can see what its doing when it runs bad... and i know its more than 13psi 30 sounds right but look it up because just a few psi off could make it run like this when under load because it wouldent have enough volume to feed the engine under load.... o and if the engine in a whole, meanign you dont just feel one or two cylinders missing but the whole enigne dies, i would say you could put the coil packs to the side of your mind for a sec and checl fuel pressure..unles the coils arent getting enough voltage to charge them but thats anouther toppic so check fuel pressure and get back to us
I Have A 01 Ranger With 3.0 And It Seems To Be Doing About The Same Thing, But Only After It Warms Up. When You Open The Throttle Wide Open At 3800 To 4200 Rpms It Misses And Jumps Around, Sometimes It Will Drive Through That Rpm Range But Most Of The Time It Wont. After 4500 Rpms It Runs Great. Any Ideas Would Be Helpfull
ok guys first things first this is just my opinon of what it sounds like to me. I would think it's either your crankshaft position sensor or your synchronizer they work hand in hand like a distributor. my first bet would be the synchronizer because it's not showing you a check engine light. this could be because the crankshaft position sensor is still good. until it give the ecm a bad signal it won't have the light come on. you can have the auto parts store check your codes. if it pulls any up that should give you a ball park idea of whats wrong. you may just have ot take it to the shop if they say its either one and pay for the troubleshooting but do the work myself. takes about 15 to 30 minutes to change them out. hope this helps if not well i tried. good luck
it's located on the back of the engine block. in the same place the distributor would be on an old chevy. your crankshaft sensor is sitting on top of it. it works just like a distributor. make sure before you pull it out that you mark everything in reference to how it is set with a marker so that you can place the new one in the exact same way.
