i have a 02 f150 / 5.4l. in recent weeks i noticed that between 45 - 60 mph if i am cruising along and i ever so slightly step on the gas i get a shutter out of my tranny as if it was trying to decide if it should down shift or not. if i hit the accelerator a little harder it does down shift or converter unlocks and the rpms go up and the truck takes off just fine. it never does it towing and it will do it withe the overdrive button either active or inactive. whats up with this. tranny was flushed 10,000 miles ago. started after that.
i usually dont let any place wrench on my vehicles. but since draining the converter is not easy i thought i would let some one else do it. i have read post that say there is a drain in the converter behind the rubber plug in the tranny housing so i looked. i hand cranked the engine around twice and never saw one.in the old days we use to drill a 5/16 hole on two oppisite sides of the converter to drain and then put two 3/8 bolts in to balance each other out. but i'm not doing that.i'll look into having a more rep garage do it. what to think about synthetic versus merc v.
i have the same problem with my 01 F150/4.6L: but was told it could be a throtle body or egr needing cleaning??? i had my fluid in the trans changed last year so i am not sure if that is the problem..
My '99 4x4 is doing the same thing it sounds. I'm thinking it may be in the front diff on mine though, as if it's trying to engage into four high or two high. I have the switch on two high but some times it doesn't fully disengage.
OK here is what i had, after much run around, i had 3 tranny shops that wanted to change out the converter, replace the filter, flush the cooler, use addatives, and burn the truck for the insurance money. i finally got a check engine light. the code said i had a miss fire in the #7 hole. so after 2 1/2 hours of ratchets, extensions, u-joints and scraping off three pounds of knuckle flesh, problem solved. the only indication i ever had was that damn stummble at 50 - 60 mph with a light exceleration. so i thank everyone for there in put but as it stands right now its Truck 1 Humans 0
thanks everyone for trying.
I've seen transmissions rebuilt because of engine misfires and see engine work done because of transmission problems. It's pretty easy to get fooled sometimes.
i have recently bought an 8000lb camper to pull with my 2002 screw f150 5.4l with tow package, air bag helpers, and k&n seem to do the job just fine. i also purchased a 25000gvw fan cooled trans cooler. here in florida the pavement ges hot enough to fry an egg and the air temp reaches 100 almost daily. so i figured it wouldn't hurt to do a little extra cooling. any one got a pro or con i should consider before installing?
