You can't get just any C-6 tranny, since different type bell patterns were made to acomodate a variety of engines. The C-6 that you want will have a more rounded shape to it, and the very top two bolt holes should be about 6" apart from each other. This style will fit all Fe. Hope this is a clarification on what to look for if going to the scrap yard.
The early models I think were called the Cruise -A- Matic behind the 352 and early 390,s.. they amy have even made a FMX for some also...and of course the C6..but Trans-Dapt makes pretty much any conversion you want..
I know they just came out not long ago one the the FE to C4 and 385 series to C4 and P-Glide to 385 series.... But thats about the limit to my knowledge on what fits?? LOL..
Here's a question: How does the FMX fit in the ford transmission line up? Is it the C5. I so rarely hear about the C5. But when was the FMX used, and in what?
I believe It was used in the through out the late 60's and thru 70's it was heavy tho. And it was used in trucks. here is what i found
The Ford C4 was a three-speed, light-duty automatic transmission introduced in the 1964 model year and produced through 1986.
It featured an aluminum alloy three-piece case (bell housing, main case, and tailhousing). This was significantly lighter than earlier cast iron Cruise-O-Matic designs. It also used a Simpson planetary gearset.
It was used with Ford's inline six-cylinder engines and small V8 engines (see Ford Windsor engines), usually up to 302 in³ (5.0 L). By comparison, the 351 Windsor and 351 Cleveland small and intermediate-block engines were backed by the medium-duty FMX.
The FMX used stronger MX-type rotating parts in the smaller FX case; introduced in 1968 and built until 1982 at the Fairfax plant, which closed when the FMX was balanced out. The FMX used a Ravineaux planetary gearset.
The Ford C6 transmission was a heavy-duty automatic transmission built by the Ford Motor Company between 1966 and 1996 for use with large, powerful big-block V8 engines. It was very similar to the C4 transmission but could handle greater power. It was used primarily in trucks, although it was also used in some larger cars with big block engines, such as the Ford FE engine and Ford 385 engines.
Among the performance crowd, the C6 is the best and most desirable. The FMX is probably the rarest in general, but it was not used in cars. Some parts might interchange between the C4 and C6, but doubtful on the FMX.
