4x4 Test Conducted
Venturing into the unknown with an untried truck, I was very happy with the results. The FX4 F-150 is frickin' wicked. I put my truck through stuff I would have thought twice about in my lifted Bronco and not only did it whoop the trail's butt, it did it with style.
To be honest, there are a few things I would have liked to have had. no steps, a level kit with 33" M/T's and some rock rails. but I made do with what I had...these items would have been really nice when I had to backup 1/4 of mile to avoid climbing a tree that would have ripped my steps off
After 3+ hours in 4Lo on a trail built to accomodate only a Jeep, I got 13 mpg when i filled her up this morning (120 miles of highway and 250 miles city driving). Not good, but then again, while 4wheeling, I was in the 2000 rpm range alot with lots of stops and starts. The only damage I sustained was a 2 foot scrape along the bottom of the passenger side step and I broke my front licence plate protector. I can't vouch for the skid plates, but I didn't peel this set back like I did on the 94 F-150, so I think they're okay. They got to know the rocks intimately.
Now, if you don't mind a read, I'll relate my experience yesterday. Sorry for the size of the pics.
Mistake #1: I decided to take my 06 Supercrew out with <800 miles into a pretty serious off-road 4x4 park.
Mistake #2: I went out there ~4:30 P.M. (about 1 1/2 hours until sun goes down. Thank god for maglights and foglights.
Mistake #3: I have running boards on my truck.
So yesterday I was just sitting there and thinking about how I wanted to get my shiny pretty new truck dirty. So I rounded up the family and away we went to Tahuya National Forest. After driving 50 miles to get there, I turned onto this 1 lane washed out dirt road and drove about 1 mile to the trail head. I should have stopped here but I didn't. I didn't get the message when the front diff skid plate was dragged across the stumps to enter the trail. You might say I'm a little hard-headed.
So anyways, I get into the 4x4 zone and play around for a few minutes in a little wallow and get some mud on the tires. I got bored. Seeing a trail ahead of me, I boldly went forth.

Quick snapshot of the trail
After about 100 feet the trail got to rocky and full of tree roots to safely use 4Hi, so i switched to 4Lo and kept going. Rounding a sharp corner

I saw this
never one to resist a challenge, I idled up the is 40+ degree incline and scared the daylights out of my daughter and wife. the LS in the rear axle really comes in handy at times like this. btw, I don't recommend going up on 2 wheels in a truck. it sucks when you have to lean to one side of the truck to prevent falling on the side and doing some pretty serious body damage

little bit of a better view of the angles involved. you can actually see where the 2 passenger tires were contacting the ground while the drivers tires were in the air
so after cresting this hill, I decided it's time to get go home. thats when the first problem arrived. when you go 4wheeling, sometimes you can't go back the way you came...safely anyways.
anyways, after 3 hours of driving around in 4lo and taking the occasional wrong turn, I finally got out. along the way, I took a few more pics

I couldn't resist pretending I was some "Trail Ready" Jeep

don't you just love how I still have the dealership paper plates on my truck? Hook-Em Horns
and this is what I saw when I got home really late at night when it was really dark.

luckily the skidplate dids it's job and didn't buckle

the sad thing is, i was playing in mud up to the rim centers and only got these little specs of dirt on the truck

Conrad Weiser state forest near Hamburg, PA
Near Wellsboro, PA Logging roads. was winter and ground was fairly solid, so not much mud. Approx 1000 feet up from the area's ground level. Up a steep loose climb.I have had it muddy on other occasions too, but never got pictures. Even towed the pop-up camper down into Paragon for Uroc, came out with truck and trailer coated in black coal mud, but forgot to take pics.
now if only someone out there was as stupid...I mean as intrepid as I was and got some good pics

I have these posted in another thread, but thought someone else might want to see them that didn't get to.
Very fun, found out the truck was very capable, and took a very long time to clean it off.
Didn't rag it out or anything either, idled into the field and stayed around 2k rpms and only had to rock my self out of a hole once.
Plus when you drive nice and slow you can feel the raw power of the Ford and you can personalize the whole if you know what I mean. Hell most of the time I don't put it in 4x4 and have been up to 3/4 of tire height.
As for Tylus, I think I felt hair growing on my head. Who needs rogaine. Just send more pictures. I would of loved to be invited to that party. How many trucks were there? I'ts always better with a Ford only convoy because you get tired of pulling out the junkers.
I have to remember my camera on our next outing.
Thanks for the pictures.

Needless to say, I'm NOT doing that with my F150. I do take it off road and lock it into 4 WD when needed. But, it's not my trail rig.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
At some point, say... 7 - 8 years or so, I'll BUILD my F150 to be an "Expedition" quality rig. By that point, I should have a new Daily Driver anyways.

I only wonder how well it would of done if it would of had those super swampers I wanted. Guess I'll have to get them and try them out.
