rusty, I went thru two F-427's from DSC, first one had the exhaust crossover welded shut with deep grind marks on the machined surfaces. Second F-427 was welded on the bottom side 6" long where the exhaust crossover runner goes due to cracks. First one quoted as "cherry" second as "clean good used condition".
At $350 before shipping twice your better off asking on other forums or ebay, better chances on an strangers "good used condition".
Someday i'll get my paws on a Sidewinder, I must compare vs the F-427.
rusty; somewhere on this forum weeks ago someone stated the 410 iron intake came with a big "S" on a port runner. Is that true or 410's used the standard iron 4 barrel? Reason asking I purchased a 67 Merc with a 410 years ago and still have the intake and air cleaner top.
I have no idea. It shouldn't be too hard to spot the S if it's there, though.
I know I wont be ordering any DSC parts anymore, though. Maybe their new parts are ok, but avoid the used stuff. He should represent it as it is, and at least let you know what you're buying.
well these F427 intakes are Alum. right?....I mean it's no problem to weld that up....quite easy......but I agree, I don't like the sound of how he does business....if I'm buying an intake I have to weld, I don't want to pay top dollar for it! And I also don't like that he lies about it all.....sounds like a guy I don't want to have anything to do w/.
They are made of aluminum, DSC has someone that repairs his damaged intakes.
I was working across the street from a foundry a few years back so I walked in as they were casting aluminum. They had some Edelbrock intakes as scrap, was told they are of 808 alloy, easy to cast, machine and weld plus flexable and not brittle. Sounds like the right properties for intakes.
alright, so I'll ditch that thing then I guess!.....Also, I was looking up a Weiland Stealth, and the ports where it meets the heads are a bit larger than the Perf. RPM one, is was like a 2.2 cross sectional area on the RPM to like a 2.4 area on the stealth......what do you guys think about that?.....The stealth's were shorter, and wider than the RPM....but it costs around $500....so it's a bit more pricey, but it was what I was thinking of getting long before I really looked into it much, and before I really knew much aout the edelbrocks....I just happened to do some research on it today. But I think I will end up getting an F427 from DSC......seems like a badass intake to me....or am I wrong again?...lol
LedHead, looking at what where your going with you motor.. I would Just look for a cheap but in good shape ED Performer (not the rpm) straight Performer..that will save you weight...the Port match it to you either C4"s or C1's..Port match only about 2: up the runners and leave the rest stock..as that will keep the volocity up and work well with the smaller cam your running..
You should be able to get an Aluminum performer used on ebay for like $75 to $100..from someone upgrading to the RPM intake.. JMO..
I ran a port matched 440 performer on my motorhome for 20 years..with great results!! JMO..
yea, I will def. not get that Performer....it would almost be like running my stock 2 BBl....I've got a bunch of motors I can build, so if I'm gonna spend the money for an intake, it'll be a good one. I've got a 391 that I plan to offset grind, and make a high RPM motor out of, w/ a set of ported D2 or C8s. I also have a couple other blocks that I wanna stuff a stroker crank in, and put the early heads like my C1's on it. I like working w/ my FE more than all the other ford motors I've worked w/, and def. more than any of the chevys I've build before, I can get these motors for cheap to. so I've got many build plans...some for off road trucks, some for on the road hot rod trucks like the 302 Ranger I built.....and of course, some to put in small cars that originally had 4-bangers....which is where that high RPM one will go!
oh and the motor I'm building first is for my Bronco.....so I really don't care much about weight, as I am building the entire chassis from scrath, and putting the motor a little lower, and a little back......

Russ; the Performer I have the ports were .970" wide by 1.865" tall, ugly match for 1.34" x 2.34" heads. By the time you get the ports opened to 1.34" x 2.34" stock 6090G heads the flanges will be on the shop floor. Years ago with having to deal with smog I Tig welded behind the flanges on up to the valve cover rails then opened the ports to match the heads. Ported up to 3 inches from the flanges, port walls were almost down to 1/16" thick. This made a big improvement plus looked stock for smog checks. So far the old 414 build likes the F-427 best with 670 SA but then running a old school 428 cj cam, I don't want to muck up the 14 to 15 mpg.
Well Guys thats true about the Ports!! I wasnt thinking this morning I guess about the size of the ports in the Performer for the FE..I had in mind the one in my minds eye of the 440 Performer!
Kurt you are right about what you have heard..I have heard the same thing..But I figured by taking a Roll to it..that could be fixed? But I guess Carl has already been there and done that... I was thinking of a cheap way to get what he was looking for?
But ya cant pass air and fuel thru Nothing..thats for damn sure.. Like you said ..I guess if he's going to port the heads and go the CJ valves ? why stop there , and get a decent Intake and Cam to match..and GO FOR IT!! The caps were meant!! LOL
And Carl, its rather hard to beat an Old school motor running 14 to 15 mpg!!
Back in the 70's there weren't many aluminum aftermarket FE's intakes available in dual plane. I was into the Performer by an hour helping install a hot water heater so I didn't have much to lose when welding and porting should the experiment failed. Back then with smogs I had to machine the damper numbers off and restamped with 8 degrees retarded marks. Passed the smog timing test.
