I have a 04 heritage 4.2L w/5speed and i currently am running an aftermarket tach. I have ford racings tach driver hooked up on the crank position sensor and it causes it to miss every once in awhile. i guess its stealing the signal from the computer and causing the problem. i know you can also hook up to some wires on the coil pack instead. anyone know what wires these are?
how about the wiring harness that plugs into the instrument panel, anyone know which wire there runs the tach (for those who have a tach in the cluster)?
I put an aftermarket tach in mine, because it didnt have one.
You have to make a splice into a wire in the harness that goes into the PCM.
I still have the directions that cover pretty much any car you would want to use. For ford they are pretty much all the PCM and a certain wire, mine was 48 and it was a pink and white wire. Tap into that, run it to your tach and bam!
The wire is actually the connection between the ignition module and the PCM, they like to talk to eachtoher so they know what is going on. Especialy with RPM and igntion timing and spark advance.
I just installed an aftermarket tach in my 98 f150 xl. I spliced into the pcm module, pin 48 pink and white wire. I had to remove the battery and battery box to get access to the pcm but once that was out of the way it was clear sailing. Mounted the tach on the steering column on left side which gives me a clear view of all lights and guages. Took about 2 hours when all was said and done. www.iequus.com is where I got my guage from.
