bad e-brakes
Hi all, just a note of prevention for all,i only have 12000 miles on my f150 and the emergency brakes were seized and not working.Itook it to the dealer and they stated it was NOT a warrenty issue but part of regular maintainance and was my responsability, even though they admitted there is a problem with the emergency brakes seizing on 04 and up f150 trucks.Just letting you all know to keep the required maintainance up to date or it's out of your pocket for repairs.(which was aprox 1.5 hrs labour to clean up the sliders and lube them.hope i cought you before it's too late.
Something's wrong with this picture....
Check the TSB section. Also, are you the original owner? If so, they should have covered the malfunction. Call ford customer care and let 'em know.

What maintaince do they require????
Occasional use????
Im sure the shoes will need replaced at some point but not at 12,000 miles surely.
Just want a little more info here. At this point Im with wildcard, something dont sound right!

Mine was fixed under warranty and so were others on here. If I were you I would call and ask to talk to the GM of there dealership and start there. The dealer is screwing you. The only think excluded in a bumper to bumper warranty is brake wear. If a caliper seizes, it's on them, not on you the parking brake is the same way. There is no maintenence on it. It's just flat out a dumb setup. My 99 escort zx2 has an almost identical setup that also froze up. It's not just the trucks, it's just a poor design/ lack of quailty materials that should have never found it's way on a $35,000 truck. They even replaced my parking brake shoes under warranty because they were destroyed from the brake staying on.
mine e-brake was sticking, and the dealership fixed it under warranty and im not even the original owner of the truck so i dunno but what i did and not saying that it will work in your case but there is a thread on here called volient vibration or something likee that and in that someone has posted a entry about what the problem was and how the fixed it and i printed them off and handed them to the guy at the dealership and i said will you make sure that whoever works on this truck gets these... wether he did i dunno but my truck is fixed and i havent had a problem since but good luck and keep us posted

I have nothing but praise for my dealer. There IS a TSB out there for the e-brakes on these trucks. Check out the Full Text TSB section here at FTE.

HI,in reply to your inquirys about my emergency brake problems.in fact i did put up a stink about paying for repairs after only 12000 miles and the fact that i had also just purchased a new mustang also from the dealership they did cover the repairs (but)informed me that at 6ooo miles(aprox)the brakes need to be looked at and all lubed as part of the regular maintainance.I told them to show me in the manual where it says this..but they couldn't,or wouldn't.I talked to the service manager who appolagized(hope thats spelled right) for the inconvienance and offered me a couple free oil changes .Anyway i have always had good service from this dealership in the past (hense the 2 new vehicles from them)
It is a very common problem. The part that actually gets stuck is a scissor style spreader, that has no lubrication from the factory. When engaged, the corrosion on it causes it to stick. I believe there was a TSB. I would laugh in the face of any service writer who told me a sticking parking brake on an 04 up F150 wasnt covered under warranty.
The expander cam is located between the 2 parking brake shoes in the drum assembly on the rear brakes. If you look at the brake backing plates you can see part of it attached to the parking brake cable. The problem is that if the cams have seized up, spraying oil from the backside isn't going to fix it. You have to take the rotor / drum assembly off, then the parking brake shoes, and you will find the expander cam between the two shoes near the top of the drum. You see what I mean when you get them out. Once they become rust welded, you need to tap at them with a hammer to break them apart. Then you can clean them up and reassemble with either some high temp grease or some antisease so they won't rust together again in the future.

I don't park on any hills. Would there be a problem with them if I never use it. What I men by that is if I come out and drive away would I have that dreaded parking brake siezure even if I don't use it.
