Smoke Question

Ok, so I've got an 01 F-250 PSD w/ 6637 filter, 4 inch exhaust, gauges, valve body, and DP tuner. These mods have really strengthened the truck up and I really like blowing smoke all over those little souped up foreign cars with the fart pipes. But my question is - what causes all the smoke?

Smoke is caused by unburned diesel fuel. Looks kinda cool but is a waste of money really.

10 x 4, I appreciate the response. By the way, is there anyway to increase the amount of smoke output. Like fuel pump mods or anything?

Well you appear to have a DP chip. Crank it to max or get a smoke tune. I really wouldn't pursue any other methods. Yes cranking up the fuel pressure will make for more fuel and more smoke, but that area is limited. It will add more smoke though.

To be just a bit more precise, black smoke is partially-burned fuel, while unburned fuel is white smoke.

Beyond what you can get from dp-tuner, some big injectors will really put the smoke out. Or you can give yourself a boost leak somehow or an intake restriction, which will produce a lot of smoke and real high EGTs and low power (due to lack of air to finish burning the fuel).

Haha, I'm embarrassed to say, but I tried that once, Kris. Truck was parked in the driveway... I got a white kitchen trash bag and put it over the filter... but didn't leave any filter exposed. Well, sure enough, went around and started the truck, then ran back around to the front to see if I needed to adjust the bag... too late! The bag was sucked too tight to budge, and the filter started collapsing on itself, as did the big intake tube. So I ran real quick back to the cab and shut it off. Trashed a perfectly good filter (it only had about 8k on it). Glad I had a backup on the shelf.

Oh well... won't ever do that again. Hope everyone gets a good laugh at my expense.

Our engines consume the equivalent of 20,000 gallons of air for one gallon of fuel. It's a wonder your truck even ran like that. That's why you leave part of the filter exposed. I'm not that dumb to do that to my baby, however i have been told it is amazing.
