I am going to be heading to some cold areas and am wondering what the block heater will draw? I will be using a generator to power the block heater since I will be a long way from a plug in.
Well, the general concensus on wattage seems to be "it varies".....
But they seem to run from around 500-1500 watts. Some people plug them into a timer set for a couple hours before they plan on starting their truck - rather than leave 'em powered up all night.
The original Ford block heaters were 1000 watts, what do you call cold areas.
At 0*F you would require about an hours heating....... add an hour for each -15*F degrees below 0*F. I check my upper hose, if it is pressureized and warm your good to try a start. Just cycle the GPs three times before starting.......ie turn ignition on, wait until GP clicking stops, shut off and do it again.........2-3 times. Won't hurt a thing but helps significantly.
