I've got to buy one whether I like it or not. What are the advantages of dual mass? Is it worth the $625 difference in price? (This was priced at Carolina Clutch - support the forum supporters, right?)
Also, is it possible to buy only the primary flywheel? Or are the primary and secondary flywheels balanced together? I've got to ship this thing to South America by air and quite possibly will have to pay by the lb.
My bad - always do a search before you pop a "new" question.
Now that I've done some reading, the following questions have arisen:
1.) Luk or South Bend? It was stated that clutch replacement in the future is cheaper when you do the whole 9 yards now with Luk. True?
One person said that the South Bend was preferable if you planned on doing some mods in the future. I doubt that I will, but maybe I'm just ignorant to what mods should be done. I don't pull heavy loads and there is no place to drive fast. I'm all for better economy, though
2.) Would it be prudent to change out the master, slave and/or fork while I'm in there and ordering parts from the States? I live a long way away and the truck is relatively new to me, so at times I think in terms of just getting the thing to where I know that certain parts that are 10 years old are replaced before I get left high and dry... again.
3.) Someone commented that if one plans to change the downpipe - now's the time. Living where it's not feasible to buy an aftermarket replacement, is there any reason why I couldn't have one fabricated here by loosely following the design of one found online?
4.) Rear main oil seal is being replaced (which is how they discovered the problem with the flywheel) -- what else should I look at replacing while everything is in pieces?
I am happy with the south bend con-o clutch. I would recomend replacing the slave cylinder now because mine lasted about 1 year after I replaced the clutch, just got old i guess.
You cannot order an aftermarket downpipe online or by phone? How are you getting an aftermarket clutch? But this would be the time to install the dp with the tranny out, I bet it would be very easy to modify the firewall with all that room.
just order all the stuff from one place. like beans or tymar.
definitely do the dp while you have the tranny out. replacing the slave is not a bad idea either. and no matter what you do dont put a dual mass back in your truck.
I can order stuff online and have it shipped to some blessed soul who will bring it down in their luggage OR I can pay by the pound for air cargo ($3.90 / lb + $60 surcharge). The dp is just a funky size and shape for someone to bring down, but not for cargo.
You two are hot on your sbc's, but what validity is there in the Luk system of changing everything out now and gaining some ease and/or saving $$ in future clutch replacements?
I think I'll go for the slave replacement and just get it out of the way.

Man I learned a lot last night reading all the info from the search I did on old threads about the flywheel and related items.
It's quieter and does a better job of dampening some of the 7.3's vibrations. The downside of the DMF is that it does wear out quickly and costs a small fortune to replace.

No.....not by a longshot.

In that case the standard Luk repset will be perfect for you IMO. You don't really have a need for the more exotic ($$) surfaces.

The Luk SMF will never need to be replaced...only resurfaced. The single mass/luk combo is lighter, more durable, and less expensive than stock replacements. There is no downside other than your shipping expenses.
