I'm looking at a 2000 F-250 with a six speed. I've heard there were problems at that time with F-550's related to the flywheel. They had a two piece flywheel, called "dual mass". My question is, does the F-250 have a two piece flywheel? - Tom
The "problems" attributed to Ford's DMF are largely overblown. To hear some people talk, the DMF is a grenade with the pin already pulled, just waiting to go off.
Not true.
They can experience problems that a SMF won't, simply due to their design, but they're not an inherent weak point in the vehicle. Granted, a catastrophic failure may well ruin something expensive (like a bell housing) but a catastrophic failure of ANY part of a vehicle is going to be expensive.
That said, the ZF-5 was the one that Ford mated a DMF to. When they started using the ZF-6, which is the transmission in that truck you're asking about, they switched to a single mass.
