It´s the day after and Im disapointed. The weatherpeople warned that this would be a cat 3 storm on a 3-level scale but it was just some snowing and wind. Here you can hear the old folks say "I remember the war the snow was so deep the soldiers rested on the telephone posts" I have pics from northern norway where my friend is sitting on top of a lamppost.
When winter weather starts i am perplexed with myself. The love of getting the snow mobile out and carving lines in a snow drift are crossing my mind, also the thought of my harley covered up in the garage and not being out on a two lane road carving up the corners hurts me. The thoughts of the kids building a snowman and playing in the yard brings a smile to my face, the thought of the runny noses and colds and flu stuff makes me wimper. Not having to mow the grass and do yard work bring a sigh of releif from my aching back, The thought of shoveling snow from the sidewalk sends shivers up my spine. The crisp night air and the quiet of a snow covered field relaxs the day to day pains that plauge me, but the thought of trying to remove and fold my lumber tarps when they are frozen makes me hope i win the lottery before the temps get that cold. I just dont know what to do.
We haven't had winter hit here yet...but never fear, it will. We always seem to go direct from summer to winter with very little of what could be called "Fall" in between. The nights are getting down into the 30s but the days are still up in the 70s and only one small rain storm earlier in the month, but that will change vitually without notice. The temps will plummet and we'll get a gully washer of a rain storm where we won't see the sun for weeks, and the entire county turns into one giant lake. And what's isn't covered with water will be nothing but mud. Snow? I miss the stuff, actually. In the last three years we gotten just a trace of snow, out of a particularly cold storm late last winter. The hills around the lake are often well-dusted with snow after a winter storm, but down here at lake level it'll remain cold, but no snow.
It's probably just as well. I grew up living in the snow and learned to drive in it, but in these parts on the rare occasion when we do get a half-inch of snow on the roads everybody freaks out and spins off into the ditches at the first opportunity. And you get the morons with 4X4s (not to imply that everyone with a 4X4 is a moron, just talking about the certain ones who are) who think that makes them invincible and they actually drive faster than they do in the dry, as if to say, "Hey look at me! I've got four-wheel drive, I gots traction!"
Yeah buddy...let's see how much traction you have when you have to stop in hurry!
All in all, I like the cold better than I do the heat. I just melt when the temp climbs over 100º in the summer. New England looks better and better to me all the time...
Yea Dan, I had to put a sweatshirt on this morning and I imagine tonight will be the first fire of the season. Rain is coming for Halloween, just like clockwork, and probably won't stop till Christmas. You must be high desert down there.
Nope, just about two hours N-NE of the Bay Area. We just get some real temperature extremes here, from mid 20s in the winter to 110º or so in the summer. It's much the same up around Redding, but even hotter there in the summer.
Already had our woodstove going, once a few weeks back for about two days and then again about three nights ago, for the last few nights. Soon we'll have to keep it going all the time again.
