My '01, F350, 4x4, dully,7.3l, auto had a studder, slip feel when it shifted into 4th/OD yesterday while pulling my travel trailer. I could stop it by poping out of OD back to 3rd gear. After dropping the trailer, it would still do it, if I allowed it to shift into OD at ~50-55mph and was still trying to accelerate. If I went into OD at ~60-65mph without pushing to accelerate it did not do it.
We just returned a few weeks ago from a 3,000+ mile trip to CO/UT mountains and this is the first time to pull the trailer since with limited driving otherwise. I did notice it do this a couple times on the trip before we were warmed up real good.
Did something get damaged? Or did I break something? Could the "fix" be a simple flush, fluid change service?
yellow_jacket is on the right track. These transmissions have an overdrive clutch pack that is way under-engineered for these trucks. since the overdrive gear has to process torque from the engine of .71 revolution (i think) and convert that into 1 full revolution on the output, it has alot of work to do. it's opposite of a gear reduction.
i always let out of the pedal to take some driveline input stress off of the tranny when shifting in and out of OD. you do not have to completely let out of the pedal, just lighten up, and get back on it after the shift. go ahead and change the oil, you may find some fine particulates of clutch material. you could send a sample of the oil to Blackstone, and see if they find any clutch material in it.

That is exactly how I shift mine, both empty and towing.
Thanks for the replys. I'm going to be towing my trailer a short distance again today, so I plan to try a few more things to further describe the problem.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the slam into OD is bad news. I just put the third tranny in my 99 F350. Both failed trannies started the downward slide with the slam into OD.
On a positive note, Ford now warrants these crummy trannies for 75,000 miles, which is good news since the first and second trannies did not make it that far (73,000 for the first and 71,000 for the second).
My third tranny has about 2,000 miles on it, and as I write this, the truck is in the Ford shop for a teardown/rebuild/replace of the tranny. What a piece of junk.
I like Ford, but if I buy a Chevy for my next truck it will be to get that Allison tranny.
while this probably isnt it, it doesnt hurt to check. I got a kink in my transmission lines coming out of the cooler and that shudder is what I got. When we finally realised that there was a bend in the line and fixed it, everything ran fine again (and much cooler tranny temps)
well my tranny went into over drive, but late, and would not lock when warmed up. and the O/D light was flashing, and slippped all the time in 1st-2cd-3rd, i have it in the shop, and im going to take pictures tomarow morning of all the warn/broken parts that the mechanic told me he found inside. but he did tell me my overdrive clutch pack was fride completely, wich is what the error code reader had pulled before starting the job, so ill be taking pictures of that as well.
