hey, i was going down the road just fine, i stopped for a sec. turned truck off for a min. and would not start. fuel pump is not coming on, maybe bad ground or just screwed up pump, can someone tell what color the power wire is to test if pump is getting power? thanks
Check the fuel pump relay. It's located in the power distribution box under the hood. This is a pretty common problem. It could also be the inertia switch.
What exactly is one supposed to check on this relay ? I too do not hear my fuel pump whirring on the 95. Now on my 92 it clicks and whirrs real nice.
I just picked up another Xplorer- 1995 XLT w/ control trac. I am having the same issue as Bigwill250, just got insurance and drove home. When I went back out and nothing !!
There is no fuse for the realy ? Or the fuel pump correct ?
Look at the very last diagram in this link. You'll see there is a fuel system fuse, and the fuel pump relay. You should be able to switch the FP relay with one of the other ones to test to see if the FP primes when you turn the key to the ON position.
thanks, but put new relay and fuse anyway, i was going to put a test light through the wire going to fp to see if the fuel pump is even getting power. just a precaution i dont want to buy a fuel pump and not need one. been there done that... i was told if i probed the wrong wire it could mess up the fuel guage or even short out fuel system????? is that true?

If putting a new relay and fuse in didn't help, check the inertia switch. Make sure it isn't tripped, and that the connector on the bottom is firmly attached. I agree, putting a new fuel pump in is the very last thing to try. If you think it is the FP, try tapping on the tank with a rubber mallet to see if it makes any difference.
Sometimes you can bring a dead pump back to life by simply giving the gas tank a good whack with your hand. Been there & done that a couple of times myself.
If that doesnt work check voltage at the inertia switch.
If you're driving a 97 that would be the dark green/yelow stripe wire. Should have 12 volts for 2 seconds when you turn the key to run.
ive checked the reset switch under the dash, (inertia switch) is that it or something else im willing to beat the hell out of the tank and truck right now-lol. its a 96 explorer xlt
The inertia switch should be in the passenger foot area. On a 96 I think its by the trans hump. You may have to peel back the carpet a bit. I'm not clear from your previous post... did you replace the FP relay? When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the FP prime for a second or 2. I assume this is not happening... correct?
like Marragtop said. If you switch the relay ( I paid 8.30 for the part at dealership ) and you do not hear the fule pump engage - like a click whir sound- THEN go beat the hades out of your truck ( J/K ) haha. it is a stepwise approach cus no one wants to take off the gas tank.
no, its not happening, other than the fuel reset switch under the pass. dash is there another switch there and if i stick my testlight in the wires going to fp will it mess anything up if i dont get the power wire first?
There is no other switch under there other than the red reset button. The relay I changed is under the hood in the power distribution box.
I performed this test with the WOT relay as replacement because you dont need to start the truck- you only need to turn the key on to engage the fuel pump to hear it. I also buckled my driver seat safety belt so the darn chime would shut off.
(this is what Marragtop posted above I cut and pasted)
