I answered on the other thread,...my money is on the distributor. Make sure u turn the engine to TDC , then pull the distributor and have a look at the shaft and gear.

Yeah, my money's on the distributor too. Do you have a spare you can put in and check? My buddy was trying to get a rebuilt engine going that kept backfiring and had no power (318 that's why ), turns out that one of the springs on the mechanical advance had broken. Made a world of difference after he put it back in after rebuilding it.

I don't know where to get kits. Maybe Performance Unlimited? My buddy had them rebuild his distributor.

I just re-read your opening post. Did you say beer?? Well? Were Chad and I right with the distributor? Getting thirsty ....

I hope you got it sorted out. These things can be frustrating.

sounds like the resistor wire has failed an is giving the points to much power an is frying them out.

just ordered new dist today, should be in tomorrow. also ordered the igniter elec to put in it, figured it would be easier to do out of the engine.
hopefully it will be running tomorrow, unless it snows again.lol

got the dist today, put the electric's in it, but i can't get the rod that goes to the oil pump out of the old one. any ideas? i tried peratrating oil and channel locks with no luck. the other option is a part # for a new one. that would probably take a week for the guys around here to find.
thanks all
