i finally got the old one out, clamped it down and beat the old dist off. no-one had a clue what i needed. i actually got it to start today, ran real strong. i only went around the block cause my kids were home, hopefully tomorrow i can go for a ride.
now i just have to figure out what's up with the starter. half the time it doesn't spin, and sound like the battery is dead, then it'll work. doesn't make sense. the starter is only a couple of years old. i've noticed that when it runs slow, when i let off the key the engine will spin backwords a bit. also starting to make a whinning sound sometimes. i'll pull the starter tomorrow and get it tested.
what else can go wrong.lol
thanks all

Man, never say that, not even joking.....then again Murphy's been living at my place so long I'm sure he'll like your place even better. God knows I won't miss the SOB.
Congrats on getting her going!
before you pull the starter check you battery cables, particularly the ground cable to the engine block. Have fun!
Start at the battery, prove it's good. Then prove the clamps are good. Then prove the other ends of the battery cables are properly connected.
See the pattern here? Confirm every step from the battery out.....OR.....May I ask how deep your wallet is?
AL.
after this last round i don't even have a wallet left.lol
the bat is new, wire to starter seleniod new, ss to starter is an older heavy guage, ground wire same as last. i'll have to wait till thursday to replace anything else. i'll clean the ends of the older wires tomorrow.

Now, if I had a dollar for every time a "NEW" part came up short.......
It only takes a few minutes to go from the battery out & it absolutely eliminates those parts as the problem. Not to mention that if you take a few extra minutes to re-clean & grease/silicone everything, it's good for a long time to come.
As you can see, this isn't my favorite part of a vehicle to work on.

well it was the starter, $80 rebuild and it spins faster than ever. ran into a problem with it grinding on the flywheel, but the guy pulled a couple of washers out of inside and that fixed it.
so now i'm finally back on the road.
thanks for the help all.

i drive it year round, the body is already shot. there's more rust than metal. in the spring i'm going to put new fenders on it, and when i find a good cab it goes on. right now it leaks water through the roof, snow blows in throught the windows, and there's more breeze than standing outside.lol
Good for you! Keep it running ! It doesn't take much on these trucks, just think what it would have cost you for a starter and dist. on , say , a Focus!
Focus starter is ok....no dizzy....it's the little parts that add up, EGR sensor, fuel pump, ignition cylinder... At least the gas savings more than pay for the extra insurance.
