I'm posting this for my Dad. He has a 00 V10 with 41k miles in a superduty pickup that is having some starting issues. The problem started a while ago, but is progressively getting worse. Sometimes when he tries to start it, the engine will crank, but not start. It doesn't matter if it is warm or cold. Sometimes it does it several times a day, some times it doesn't do it at all. It seems to be getting gas, but no spark. Any ideas?
Is he getting any chk engine lights on on the dash?
Tps sensor ,cam position sensor ,crank position sensor.
If you or he has access to a scanner ,hook it up to the obdII port when this happens and see if any codes are being stored.
When it does start is their any odd idle or lots of black smoke(overly rich)?
Rich
Yes, he does have a scanner. No engine lights, no scanner codes. I'll mention the IAC procedure to him to try. He's also checked for fuel pressure too, no problems there.
He has had to change the ignition switch already, could it be a bad switch?
My 2000 did the same thing. Dealer replaced MAF sensor. Problem solved. So far!?!?
Work done under extended warranty. I think the cost would have been $400+.
My ranger (4.0l) wouldn't start when the IAC went unless you hit the gas- it would die if you let off. Give it a minute to warm up and it would run/idle fine. It would do this off and on for a couple months- not every day just enough to **** you off. Finally it started doing it daily esp when it was cold or if it sat a while. Ford said that was it w/o even seeing the vehicle- sure enough a new one fixed it. Now I have a V10- so far its healthy- would the IAC basically function the same on the 250 as it would on the ranger?
i would go by the word of forty ,forddoctor and racerguy any day as they are many of the dealer ford techs in fte and know the brand better then most of us.
many of these parts are very costly and are of the kind you can't return to the seller . dealer or after market due to being a electronic part. take the words of those in the know

Yeah, pretty much. Being that most people know not to touch the pedal on fuel-injected vehicles (remember pumping the gas a few times on carb'd motors to get extra gas in and set the choke?), if the IAC is closed, as it should be when the motor was hot when you shut it off, the next time you crank it, it'll be closed and the engine won't start right up. Because the computer sees the motor is cold and really richens the mix up anticipating increased air from the IAC (which isn't true because it's stuck closed), it'll flood the motor and make it all that much harder to start.
This is all theoretical of course, I do not have much working knowledge on this topic. All three of the modulars I've ever owned are not having any IAC problems whatsoever (or any other problems, for that matter).
I have, however, witnessed this scenario once or twice in other's cars
Well apparantly problem has been solved....somehow. He took it in to Ford to get the cruise recall done and had them look at it. They had the truck for 4 days, ran diagnostics but the truck started fine for them. They did some messing around with the fuel system, but did not change anything or charge him anything for the work. No problems now. The problem was getting pretty regular.
