I have a curiousity question. One of the wheels that came with my 48 F3 is a 16.5 inch. There was only one of these and it has eight lugs. Does anyone know what this wheel came on originally? I know my truck came originally with 17 inch wheels but now has 16s, so I know it wasn't for this truck...
So, no model actually came with the 16.5 inch wheel from the factory? I didn't even know 16.5 inch wheels existed. I haven't seen any advertisements for tires for them either. Are they rare? Does this wheel have any collector value or is it worth saving for anything, or should I just throw it into the junk pile?
There were 16.5 inch wheels on Fords in the late 60's thru the mid to late 80's. Is the wheel you have, have provisions for the hubcap to pop over nubs or into a recessed area like the old ones? Could it be from a competative make truck? 8 lug rims shared the same bolt patterns between manufacturers.
Although I haven't given it a really close look, it appears that the hubcap provisions are the same as the 16 inch wheels on my truck and they have pop over not the recessed nubs. So, this could even be a GM or a Mopar wheel?
If you have the "pop over" style of rims on your truck, they aren't original. You should have ther recessed nubs like the 16" F-1 wheels. The truck rims used the recess style up until 63 on the 1/2 tons and I believe 66 on the larger trucks. Chances are the 16.5 wheel is of a later vintage.
FYI some of the 57-60? trucks were equipped with 17.5 rims on the f-100 4x4 models( they were equipped for railroad use) 57-58 were 4x4 modified by Marmon-Harrington, and 59-60 were factory 4x4 from Ford.
I still have the 17.5 factory steel rims from my 59 F-100 4x4 (but I am running 16x8 rims now. let me know if you are interested in them??
If the 16x8s are off a 59 F-100, then I assume the bolt pattern is 5 on 5 1/2. Is that correct? The 16.5 inch wheel I have is an eight lug pattern. I already have four 16 inch, eight lug wheels which I will be selling when I get the truck converted to a street rod. I was mainly just curious about the 16.5 inch as that was the only one that came with the truck. Apparently, the 16.5 is not the correct wheel for a 48 F-3 and it's not in demand, so I'll just throw it in the junk heap.
