Having recently completed a frame off restoration of a 1950 F1, I can assure you that when a vendor says they have a "bolt on" kit, you take it with a grain of salt. So when I went looking for an exhaust system to fit around the stock motor, steering box, etc., I was a bit skeptical as I had heard a few nightmares.
I just purchased and installed a dual exhaust system from Red's Headers. Working alone, it took me less than 2 hours to remove the old system and install the new headers, 26" Smithy's and pipes. I had to drill 2 holes in the frame, otherwise it was a true bolt on kit!!
A great kit and the perfect sound for a Flathead. Just thought I would share some good news for a change.
I hesitated a long time before buying glass packs. It's a 239 flathead and loud or back popping sounds would, to me, be false advertising. On the advise of the folks at Red's, I went with the mid-size Smithy's and I am completely happy with them. Very smooth, low hum, with no popping. Just a nice low rumble when I take off. It is exactly the sound I was looking for. PS: I think the shorty Smithy's will give you more of a rumble, growl, and I'm sure popping.
