Today I was driving and my 1974 Ford F250 4X4 Heated up real hot then went back to normal. I noticed after driving it tonight the temperature would fluctuate it will go hot then back to normal. Not sure what is going on but I am thinking it is the thermostat sticking. It is a built 390. It was rebuilt 3000 miles ago. Any advice is much appreciated. If it is the thermstat should I use a 160 or 180 degree. It is a C6 auto.

It could be your gage also. Are the oil pressure and gas gages going up at the same time? It could also be a short in the wiring to the temp sender. Actual temp readings from a thermometer in the radiator can tell.
Use the highest temp thermostat recommended by the manufacturer for best economy. That would be at least 180°F.
