Overheating

Today I was driving and my 1974 Ford F250 4X4 Heated up real hot then went back to normal. I noticed after driving it tonight the temperature would fluctuate it will go hot then back to normal. Not sure what is going on but I am thinking it is the thermostat sticking. It is a built 390. It was rebuilt 3000 miles ago. Any advice is much appreciated. If it is the thermstat should I use a 160 or 180 degree. It is a C6 auto.

It could be your gage also. Are the oil pressure and gas gages going up at the same time? It could also be a short in the wiring to the temp sender. Actual temp readings from a thermometer in the radiator can tell.

Use the highest temp thermostat recommended by the manufacturer for best economy. That would be at least 180°F.

It was definitly heated up and not the gauges the engine was steaming. I am pretty sure it is the Thermstat. I will try it today.

Thanks

Some of us on here often ask users how they have determined that their engine is over-heating.

Steaming is a good indication

I would concur that your T-stat has gone faulty.

Make sure you bench test any replacement T-stat before installing it.
