Possible Excursion limited purchase tomorrow

Ok I just took an '01 Limited for a test drive and loved it for the most part. First the basics. It has Fabtech shocks and dual Fabtech steering stabilizer. It is white with tan leather. It has 35x12.50 BFG's with nice rims. it has JVC cd player with what looks to be a Ford cd changer in the center consule. It has 100K miles which is kinda high I think. It has the V10 gas motor and is 4x4. The dealer wants $14K for it. Now the downside: It needs new tires since the ones on it are cracked and worn. The passenger side door pocket thing along the bottom is missing. The power mirror switch doesn't work and the rear wiper arm is missing. I also heard a noise from the front but couldn't tell if it was motor or suspension since it came and went. It's at a used dealer not Ford so I was thinking I would take it to Ford in the morning to have it looked over. I would think Ford would look for every minor thing in hopes of getting my money. It looks clean for the most part. Just a few little tiny things that I believe I could live with or just fix. Do you guys and gals think the above vehicle would be worth $14K? I'm shooting for $12K but they dropped the price from $16K so I don't know. They had the truck on thier lot for 3 weeks and want to sell to get more they say. Also what kind of problems do the V10 Excursions have? Anything I should look for? Please help. I may get it anyway but I would rather have a heads up on potential problems. Also I have a history of getting ripped of at dealers. $14K sounds good to me but you all would know better since you have them already.

Just for reference autotrader lists the cheapest 01 excursion 4x4 within 200 miles at $14K. Most with about the same options seem to be in the 17-18K range. So I guess 14K isn't bad. Now what problems can I expect to have with the V10 Excursion? Any thing I should look for when I go through the truck? The Ford dealer should be able to tell me if any recalls need to be done or have been done correct?

I disagree with hatemakings/n. 14k is too much for that truck. Yes, it is a dealership, so expect to pay more. But why buy at a dealer in the first place. Thats a 12k car on the private market, at least here in California it would be. So, tell them 12k take it or leave it. They will take it, is my bet.

I live at 85365 area code. When I went to autotrader web site and did a search for 01 4x4 within 200 miles I got everything from 14K to almost 30K. I live on the AZ-CA stateline so everything south of LA shows up in a 200 mile radius. Besides I was not trying to say it was a good price. Just the price range I saw on the autotrader web site. I was trying to find out if the dealer was jacking up the price more then most places do. I know I'm going to get ripped off. It's a fact of life for me. That is why I also said I would offer 12K to him and see what happens.

I wouldn't bet on the Ford dealer telling you squat, unless you bring it in and say fix everything that is wrong with it. Then you'll end up with a whole list. You're probably better off taking it to a small mechanic shop and paying them for an hour of time to look it over. You didn't say how many miles but $14k is probably a decent price. In the midwest, the dealer we went through can barely give away V10s, everybody wants a diesel. We got our 2002 LTD 4x4 with 47,000 miles for $21k and they added a $2000 DVD system to it. It is in mint condition and we talked to the one-owner before we purchased. Drove 4 hours to pick it up because it was the best deal around.

If you want to pay $12k, offer them $12k. If they say no, walk. I'll bet they will take it. If they won't come down from $14k or will only come down to $13k, tell them you want new tires installed (and specify the tire you want). A new set of Michelin's will run you almost $1000.

The price sounds high, and from your description it doesn't sound like the owner took very good care of it. If you have time to shop around, I bet you can find one in better shape for that money. It took me months to find mine, but glad I waited.

Sounds high to me...Most people I've talked to go for the diesel in the Ex. As posted earlier, the dealers are having a hard time getting rid of the gassers. Check the mpg and be sure you are willing to live in the 8-10 mpg range. I've never owned the V10 but I understand they're gas hogs, especially lifted with big tires. Our 7.3 Ex is getting 15/20 stock.
Beyond that I agree with taking it to a smaller shop that you know for the diagnostics.
Good luck.

Just bought an 01 4x4 limited with 55K for 15K from the dealer and thought I got an OK deal. It doesn't have the upgrades but I would be very carefull about a vehicle that has that many miles on it. Tires alone are going to cost a small fortune and should be added into the purchase price to get a decent comparision. Everything in my truck works (except for maybe the heated seats). I think that 12K is probably a decent price but I bet you could find one even cheaper.

well I went back today to see if I could get the Ex to make the noise again. It did and even worse then yesterday. Sounds like stiff bushings with a slight thump felt under the floor. Anyway they didn't want to work any lower numbers on the truck since they dropped the price from 16,995 to 13,995. I offered 12 even and they said they couldn't go any lower. I just left. If it was meant to be they would have lowered it. Oh well I still have a 67 Galaxie 500 sitting around the house that I can drive.
