I've got an 86 F 150;It's been leaking a bit of coolant.I thought it was a leak in the lower rad hose, but after replacing the hose I noticed that the leaking continued and after a closer look i found that the coolant was coming from further up.it only leaks out a couple of ounces each time I park it.I suspect the water pump is the problem. Is this a tough job to replace?
I'm not exactly a master mechanic.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The worst part is getting everything out of the way. A/C, P/S, etc. It's a couple hour job if you know what you are doing. So plan a day take your time you'll be fine. Buy a NEW pump not a rebuilt. To assure you won't be doing it again soon.
The leakage is most likely coming from either the water pump gasket or a worn water pump drive shaft. R an R for the pump and/or gasket is dependent on the motor, with or w/o AC, with or w/o power steering, electric or belt driven radiator fan, etc.
I wouldnt go NAPA becuase when I was looking for my 85 F150 all they had was crappy ones. Go with Ford, I realize there gonna be a little more expensive but definately worth it if you never have to replace it again.
yeah..sounds like a water pump, come on guys, there not that hard to install... It dosnt take much time to replace. But id defenitly replace it before it becomes a bigger problem... like when my water pump went out when I was wheeling alone 30 miles away from a main road...(stupid) luckfully im a patient guy lol
