I went with a magnaflow muffler. I am going with the three inch y-pipe and high flow cats. I think I may get some hedman shorty headers. I will do this all after I finish my tranmission.
If you don't want really loud, but good deep sound, I'd say magnaflow is your best bet.
You could either do a single 3" cat back w/high flow cats or no cats(if emmisions don't matter), or dual exhaust 2.25"-2.5" with a DIDO magnaflow. I prefer the duals my self.
I love the tone of my magnaflow. It has a nice deep sound without being obnoxiously loud. I use a SIDO muffler and have a fake dual setup on my truck. The only reason being is I like the look of two pipes, but don't want ot get involved with dealing with a dual exhaust setup.
Bimmerboy1989, I'm wanting to do a very similar set up on my dad's 04 F150. It'll be alot cheaper to do the y pipe(fake duals), and he doesn't want it to loud, so no use to run all new pipe and take off cats or anything like that anyway.
But on both my trucks, 77 F100 and 79 Bronco, I have the same true dual set up and love it.
on my '88 i'm getting true duals with just high flow cats, no mufflers and 4 inch tips 45ed out the back, DE laws say you have to have cats but don't say anything about mufflers
Ok Boys, Here Is What I Have Been Working On...
85 Bronco 351w, Dynomax Headers, Dynomax 2 1/4" Dual Exhaust Kit, High Flow Cats, And Magnaflow Dido Muffler, Will Be Done As Soon As The Muffler Gets Here Around Wednesday, Let You Know How It All Sounds Later. The Headers And Exhaust Are Designed To Work Together And Fit Together Nicely, But The Headers Did Hit The Frame On The Passenger Side And The Front Driveshaft On The Drivers Side. I Made I One Inch Deep Notch In The Frame And Tilted The Motor A Bit To Get Better Clearance, And Then Still Had To Use One Of Those Metal Strips With Holes In It To Hold The Headers Closer Together To Get Them In The Right Spot. The Exhaust On Passenger Was No Problem, But The Way The Kit Is Designed The Driver Side Runs Very Close To The Tranny Pan And Then Under The Rightside Frame Rail Right Under The Bolt For The Crossmember,,,not Good! I Cut And Shortened The Crossover Pipe And It Now Goes Under The Rightside Of The Crossmember Before Turning Up. I Had Planned To Use 15" Glasspacks But Apparently No One Makes Them Anymore, With The Cats There Is Not Much Length Available Because Of The Way The Pipes Have To Be Run. The Dynomax #11378 Should Fit Nicely, And I Am Happy To Hear From You Folks That They Sound Nice Too. Oh, I Am Going To Wrap The Crossover Pipe With Header Wrap Where If Runs Next To The Tranny Pan. I Also Dicided To Use My Existing Tailpipes Instead Of The Ones From The Kit That Both Exit On The Right. Total Cost About $500 And A Lot Of Headaches. I Shoul Have Just Gotten Better Headers And Had A Tranny Shop Do The Rest, Might Have Cost More, But Would Have Taken Much Less Time And Energy. Let You Know Later How It Sounds When It's Done.
I was looking at using the kit from Dynomax as well. I opted out of that. Dynomax said they didn't make a set of headers for the 351w, just the 351m. I also had to figure out how to run the EGR and O2. By the time I was done with new headers and all it would be the same price to have custom 2.5" pipes ran. If you do have a 351m then look at the kit from Dynomax, otherwise go with having a single 3" ran of 2.5" duals. You won't regret it either way.
well if i may chime in, if you want long tube headers, a guy named Dave Pickrel makes em, just for F150 Lightnings with the 351W, i am gettin a set for my 93L. he custom fabs em to fit around the E4OD tranny, and they look awsome.
I have shorty headers, hyflow cats and 3" stainless (single) exhaust with A stainless (SUMMET) muffler. Everbody loves the sound at idle and when I put my foot in it. But on the hyway, I ware earplugs for long trips.
