Hey all, how we doin today? Well I just bought a 1990 F-150 2wd with a 302 and an AOD, picked the thing up for 200 buks with a bad motor. So, my plan for this thing is to put in a 351, and use it as my hwy. rig. Im hopeing that it will get better MPG then my 4X4. Can I run a 351 with the AOD without riping it apart? Like I said the thing is goin to see mostly HWY miles at about 65 to 75 MPH. I want to rebuild and reuse the AOD but will it handle the power of a 351?
Yes it will. I have that setup in my 1987 F-150. Blew the 302, swapped in a Windsor, and put it in front of the AOD. I get about 17 going 70 with 3.55 gears and the AOD. I only expected to get a year out of it though, two at most. The AOD will be a lot better if in your rebuild, you put in a higher stall converter, and a better valve body to handle the extra torque and ponies. Tell the tranny guy what you're putting it behind, and that you need to build it a little.
Just a word of caution if you're a do-it-yourselfer like me. The deck height on the Windsor is a little taller than the 302's, and it throws the throttle pressure cable position out of whack, and you'll burn up that AOD real quick. Mine went out in less than a mile. IMO, have a trans. shop put it in and do all the adjusting, that way you can blame them if there's a problem.
