Is the battery ground under the intake manifold?
When it loses power does everything go off? Dash lights, radio?

the battery ground is under the intake. No. all of the lights stay on. I have tested the battery and alternator and everything checks out O.K. The truck also has no oil leaks at all and only 57,000 miles on it.

Its not the battery then. I worked for a dealer for many years and he sold a lot of Explorers. Whenever we got a car that we couldn't fix, usually an electrical problem we took the truck to an electrical shop.

They always sorted it out. Its all they do.

The hardest puzzle that we had was a faulty seat belt sensor. The no start would come and go.

If it was me I'd carry my auto scanner in the truck and try to get a reading with it when the problem came up.

Not being able to trust your truck really sucks.
Good luck with the problem.

In most cases this is done in the garage and you simply wiggle and shake wire harness and their plugs. You also tap on various modules. If no answer can be found in the garage you go for a ride with the computer attached. Once it fails, as in your case, once it turns off, you simply read the scanner to see what circuit failed.

I own this scanner and it works very well..
Good idea..........
