New engine won't start

82' F100, 300, 1bbl
Alright, just finished rebuilding my engine. Got everything hooked up today. Tried starting it, it turns over but won't run. While turning over it is very weak. I sprayed starting fluid in it, and it is getting a spark but won't start. I tried slowly turning the distributer while cranking but it doesn't work. I figured that as long as it's getting fuel (from the starter fluid) and spark then it should start with no problem. I'm stumped.
I don't know the history of this truck, it was already in bad shape when I bought it and I immediately tore it apart for the rebuild.
It's got a new battery
pistons/rings bored .030 over
cam
seals
vibration damper
Head redone
Rebuilt C6 tranny

Any advise would be appreciated.

I'll check it, but when I put it in I had the #1 piston at TDC with both the intake and exhaust valves shut/rockers up

First thing pop off the air cleaner and open the throttle you should see gas spray from the accel pump.
Yes?
Next since you confirmed spark, check timing with a timing light.
Yes?
Check compression with a compression tester.
Yes?
Check firing order.

If you get all the way through testing all these things in this order it will take less than a hour (as long as you don't stop after each thing).

Vince, how do I check the timing when it's not running?

Have you got that far yet? I'm not trying to be smart, just asking.

The same way you do when it's running. Of course someone needs to turn over the starter while you are under the hood.

I won't be able to check it until tomorrow afternoon. I had to go out of town. Thanks for the tip, I'll do that.

also check valve adjustment(lash adjustment) if they are too tight it wont run either as the valves will be open all the time

Got her started. Runs beautiful. After a year and half it's nice to see all of those hours spent come to fruition.

Lesson learned. When you think that you absolutely did something correct and it doesn't need checking....check it. It was 180* out.

I appreciate all the help. I've done alot of researching and learning on this site. And it's become an damn addiction.

Feel free to check out my updated gallery. I'll add more tomorrow.
