I have a 97 Mercury Mountaineer with 173,xxx on it and today after starting the truck, the RPMs when up to around 3000 and wouldn’t go back to normal. When the truck is in ‘drive’, but stopped (like at a stoplight) the RPMs are @ 1500; they usually stay around 800-1000. It’s like I am giving it gas at all times. I am not sure what is causing this problem is, I thought it may be something with the idle. Let me know what you guys think.
Idle air control motors are a high failure item on these... you might try removing yours and filling it up with air intake cleaner spray.. let it sit for a few minutes.. drain it out.. give it plenty of time to dry and reinstall... this will usually buy you some time before you have to buy a new one.
Hey, I didn't find the helpful links topic you were talking about.
I went to start the truck this morning (43 degrees outside) and it idled high then it went back to normal. I was wondering if I should still replace the IAC valve or just wait. Any suggestions?
