I am almost embarassed to ask this question but this is the first truck I've owned with a gas tank behind the seat. I can finally put mre than 5 gallons of fuel at a time so my question is do I need to keep track of how much fuel I am putting in my tank or will the pump shut off before th gas fills up the filler neck? I think I know the answer to this but I want to be sure. The pump stops on newer trucks and they have a much longer fuel neck.
Still, the issue is that there is a rubber hose section joining the filler neck tube to the tank, and with that being in the cab, it isn't a great idea to fill to where it is "wet". I replaced my hose and still I am not going to fill it to the brim. It takes very little leakage to make a stink. The baffling in the tank isn't great, it sloshes a fair amount.
Like the guys said, make sure that all hoses and gaskets are sealed. As for having fuel in the filler neck, they've used auto shut-off nozzles for 50 years on these trucks. If you do fill with the auto shut-off, it will only leave about a quart of fuel in the filler neck and that will be gone 5 miles down the road. If you deside to shut it off early, don't check your fuel level by looking down the filler with a match!
Some pumps will shoot a stream of fuel out the filler when they shut off, most do that on my 56 so I do keep track and when I hear it start to gurgle like its almost full Ill shut it off, cause its a mess if I dont... I also have yet to seal the gauge sender unit well enough, (I do tty) it always leaks and smells when its full.....
It should shut off for you. The other thing to look out for is make sure the gasket on your gas cap is good, if not your going to have gas all over the side of your truck
