ugh

This weekend I decided to change all the fluids in the Expedition. Other than the rear end at 75k, regular oil changes and the transmission at 36k all the fluids are original with 83k on them so I figured it was about time. Did the power steering, engine oil, transfer case and front differential. After working some today I got back at it and started the transmission, coolant, thermostat and cleaning the throttle body. I realized that I need another 4 or 5 quarts of transmission fluid so that gives me an excuse to call it a night. Unfortunately that means I gotta get back at 'er tomorrow with the tranny filter and fuel filter. Wow that was a lot of work.

a lot of work, but it'll last another several years...so not so bad.

i decided to do a tire rotation today. seems simple enough, but after jacking up one side, swapping the tires, lugging the floor jack around, jacking up the other side...ends up being a little tiring as well (though not nearly as bad as your days worth of fluid changes). anyway, at least it's done.

Well I finally finished it up today. I dropped the transmission pan and replaced the filter and then replaced the fuel filter. The fuel filter is in a tough spot but its actually not all that bad to change. I avoided the bath of gasoline and only got a little on the floor. The dang transmission took a little over 15 quarts but the whole truck seems to drive a little better now. Some of the minute vibrations are gone and the throttle response is a little better as I cleaned out the throttle body and plenum.

Its good to know that everything is done right and is good for quite some time now.

Just curious---what ATF did you use?---Mercon V or std Mercon. Also I have had ATF discoloration in the transfer case---just wondering if V would be recommended for that to prevent that.

I used Mercon in the transmission, transfer case and the power steering.

When was the last time you changed your transfer case fluid? Mine was awfully dark when I changed it after 83k miles. The transfer case fluid will get dirty after a while and thats normal.

I am such a slacker, I let the dealer do that stuff for me now. I've done it all once, but with the rates I get on parts/labor, I just can't stand not to have them do it.

I've replace t-case fluid twice in 71k miles (that's about 24k per fill, including the original factory fluid.) Replacing it with Mercon 5 is the ticket to keep the tcase clutches from grabbing. You just need to change it more often than what the book says; that tcase on a 4x4 takes an extremely heavy torque load, and all the time too.

Transfer Case Fluid

Yes much to my surprise the fluid was dark and not pink at about 25K---so I've changed it at least that often but with Mercon. Never tried Mercon V. Does anyone know if Ford recommends V for the T Case?

Ford reccomends Mercon for the t-case. Just stick with regular old Mercon and make sure to keep up on your fluid changes. It'll be just fine.
