I joined the forum a while back and posted for a little while getting advice and telling the story of my '96 3.0L. Needless to say I nursed my neglected ranger back to health and it runs great with 147k on the motor.
Obvioisly this love for my truck has made me more and more an enthusiast and I'm finally taking a dive with another ranger. I'm getting ready to purchase an old square body ranger that I really cant wait to work on. My '96 is my daily driver and I know every morning she'll start and run no matter what especially after what I've been through with it.
Well, here's the plan .... I'm going to purchase this old square body next thursday, redo the suspension, I don't have to do any body work except for mabye sand and paint, then I'm going to start working on my fun toy.
My plan is to drop a 302 small block with a 357 stroker kit thrown in. Eventually when I get the money I'm going to slap a super charger on it along with some fat slicks on the back. You can't tell me that doesn't sound fun ... lol. I'll also be lowering the truck very close to the ground so you can only imagine the "coolness" factor that it's gonna have.
Any advice, reminders, pointers, or similar stories would be greatly appreciated
How would a 351 roller compare to the stroked 302? Probably be cheaper and have more potential to begin with. 351 may not fit under the hood though. I wouldn't lower it past a couple inches if your going to drive it much.
Slam it put-a small cowl hood a tonnea cover in the rear (to hide the HUGE tubs) and a four link...
so basically hack off the rear frame make a four link setup to fit some...lets say 31x15 wrinkle walls... and with a llittle N2 pull the front tires off the ground..ya sounds about right
o and the stroked 302 would not last as long but be much more rev happy but hey if you go 351 might as well go 408 or 427 with some AFR heads with the right setup 600hp N/A is not unconceiveable
We have 302 powered rangers at the strip that are running in the 9's. There's so much aftermarket suport for the 5.0, thats the way to go. Without slicks you won't be able to move, it will just roast the tires down to the rims. The ones around here aren't lowered, they look all most level like they have a straight front axle or something. It needs a cowl or tear drop hood scoop for sure, you will need lader bars or a 4 link, traction will be the key, power does you no good if you can't get it to the ground. It sounds fun, I thought about doing a 5.0 1st generation ranger, just haven't gotten around to it. Good luck and keep us posted.
