Sounds like its knockingHELP

HELP, 96 F-250 7.3 Truck hadn't been started in 3 days. Night temps in the 30's. Wasn't plugged in. I had to try 3 times for it to start and it then died and wouldn't start for about 5 more tries. I used a squirt of starter fluid and it started but sounded like it wasn't hitting on everything. Check engine light came on. I then plugged truck up and came back hours later and it starts right up but sounds like the motor is making a knocking sound and I tried giving it more fuel but it sounded worse so I shut it down. Check engine light is still on. Also looks like i have oil pressure.

Welcome to FTE katbird704!!

First thing you need to do is get it scanned to see what code is causing the CEL (check engine light). It sounds like your glow plug system either isn't operating, or isn't operating correctly. Either way, I feel it's pretty unlikely that shot of ether is the cause of the problem.

Starting fluid is a bad ide IMO. It may be that it's just cold and needs to warmup. Let it idle for a while see if it gets quieter.

If you had no oil pressure it will not run. The injectors are fired with oil pressure.

Ok, today I start truck and it runs rough like its trying to cut out. Even when I give it fuel it gets a little better but still not right. Check engine lights still on. I opened the fuel bowl and let some drain out. I start it back and it runs fine for 5 seconds and then the Check engine light comes back on and runs rough again. Can i reset the light myself somehow?
Any more ideas out there. Thanks

How did the fuel filter look? woudnt be a bad thing to change it.
make sure you have fuel in your tanks.
have you checked your oil level? if she is low then it may not run right.

a little ether tale for ya'll....my starter was toast, could barely crank my truck over. I was in the middle of the bush working in camp. -35c out, I asked a co-worker (young guy) to put a shot of ether in my truck as soon as I cranked it over in hopes It would start. Well I think he emptied half the can into my intake. Good thing the truck didnt crank fast enough to fire....we let it sit a couple hours and hooked a strap up to it and pulled it slowly to vent the cylinders of the possibly large amount of ether still in there (could smell it walking past my hood)....picked the speed up a bit and about 1.5 miles down the road she finally started sputtering and took another mile till she ran on her own. I think it was kind of vapour locked or something...but the point is it runs just fine now. So if you only put a little squirt < 1second I would highly doubt the ether is the case.

Smile Thanks for all your help

Thanks, I think I got it all worked out. I think I got bad fuel and my bowl was full of water. I let that out a few times and just let it run and its doing ok. Check engine light also went out. Maybe all the knocking was me using ether trying to start water?
And then after I plugged it up I was still starting and trying to run alot of water. I'll let the rest of the fuel out and new filters, hopefully it will be fine. Everyone keeps saying why did you buy a diesel? I keep hoping I'll run out of things to repair

Good find. Add some Power Service to the tank after you get it all cleaned out and it should take care of any water that remains.

Back to square 1 fellows. Changed filters, fuel, added treatment. Started and did fine for 5 miles and check engine lights, then started bogging down again, I can floor it and it acts like its not getting enough fuel and not hitting on everything.. I keep driving, doing good to go 30 and light goes out and fine again. This goes on for 20 miles. The Check engine light is on most of time. I' m having a hard time finding somewhere that does the check light. I went to Auto Zone and had a dummy that didn't know what he was doing. He tried to say that the light hadn't been on long enough to register a code. HELP

I would guess either a short in the injector wiring harness or maybe the pal nut on the injection pressure regulator has gotten loose. There is not too many things that can switch on and off like that.

Well I give up! Its time to take it to the doctor. Cleaned FIscreen and checked for loose connections. If I let it run it will clear and then all of a sudden its barely running again. I thinked its got a mind of its own. The guy at the parts store swears he can't get a code out of it. I think thats operator error but I'm scared to drive it to far. I'll let you all know what it was. Thanks for you're help site unseen. I'm sure I got alot of stuff cleaned that needed it.

Sounds like you lost a harness under the valve cover. Motor is going into limp mode. Check the harness connectors to the valve cover. I bet you have a bank with a burnt connector.

You might also have a bad cam sensor. Will run bad for awhile before going all the way out. Easy fix from outside.

HELP!!!!Still Nothing

Ok, news flash. Took truck to a shop and they got the codes. He said that one of them said (fuel #6 injector) and another code said something about the computer board. I'm sure I had some computer thing replaced in June of 05. They don't do much work on diesels so I have to take it somewhere else for repair. Truck still starts right up and seems to run ok few seconds with the CEL and then bogs down and will hardly run and the light comes back on. Does anyone still think that this could be the harness? Would that be worth getting someone to check just that out. Or should I go to the money pit, the Ford Dealer. Thanks
