Good chance you have a shift motor that's gummed up; take it apart, clean, lube, reinstall. You can also check voltage at the motor before doing what I just said. Now if you had only noted more details about what happens when you engage 4X.............................then the answers here might be more beneficial and focused.

Thanks for your advice. I will take off the shift motor and try doing what you advise. When I push the button nothing happens although I seem to sense a small drop in rpm like maybe the motor is drawing current. Maybe my imagination.
