Question Grippy front axle????

O.k., so I have a Dana 44 IFS on the front with Warn manual locking hubs. Driving is fine in 2wd but when in 4wd, the front end fills like it is gripping or catching and so, no speed over 2nd gear (15 mph), shakey, hesitating and almost a no go. Question for the forum: What do you think it is? My guess, different ratio rack and pinion in the front, bad hub something or another, etc....???

just remember there is a reason your not supposed to lock in your four wheel drive on dry pavement. check your wheel bearings and ball joints.

Question Well, a little help, but maybe more

This is occuring on dirt, again it feels fine in 2wd, no skip, alignment, shaking at any speed 0- 75 on pavement. Noticed a little bulge on one side of the hub case yesterday, haven't opened it up to check it out, any stories out there?

Agreed, matching gear ratio would be first suspect. Then maybe bad transfer case and maybe even clearance issue on front drivesaft from lift or bad u-joints on front driveshaft?

Do you get the same problems if you leave the shifter in 2-hi and lock the hubs? How about if you leave the hubs unlocked and shift into 4-hi?

There needs to be some slip in the system and if you're on hard packed dirt it may be binding up a bit.

My first guess would be a bad u-joint, either in the axle or drive shaft.
