My truck had not been used in about two months, so I start it and drive it a few times no problems. Today, I start it up, let it warm up and drive it to the store. When I go to start it at the store the starter solenoid just makes this buzzing noise like it turded out. I tried to jump the old solenoid with a cable and the starter did not crank or make any noise like it had power.
I replace the solenoid, the easiest thing to in a parking lot, and it does the same buzzing thing, so I figure the battery might be low and attempt to jump it with cables from my car battery. Same thing, then while I'm fooling with the jumper cables I accedentally ran the + to a ground on the truck and turned the key. I heard a popping noise from the starter come from the fly wheel. I realize I have the cables hooked up wrong, put them on correctly and it fires up like nothing was wrong.
Is my starter, which is only 2 years old, at fault? Can a jammed up starter bendix make the solenoid buzz like it is bad? If the bendix was engaged on the fly wheel some how I guess I could have rocked the truck in gear and it would have come free. I did tap it with a tire iron during my trouble shooting.
One thing I did when I changed the solenoid was to make sure there was a good ground, ie- metal to metal where the unit screws to the fender skirt. But the problem was still there after it was chamged, today I'm going to look at the starter itself and make sure nothing is loose and the power cable is not grounding out against the body of the starter.
