i plan on building a 360 to put in my 66 f100. what type pistons would you all sugest?not building nothing wild just something dependable.with maybe a cam with a noticable idle thanks any replies will be greatly apreciated
Piston options for the 360 are very, very limited. You're not going to get the compression you need for a large cam (one with a noticable idle). You say you want something not wild just dependable, then you want a large cam! It dont work that way.
Probably the best way to get anywhere near decent compression in a 360 is to use Silvolite #3137 pistons. With a standard Fel-Pro head gasket, assuming 70cc combustion chambers, you'd have 8.63:1 compression. Ford's rated compression ratio for these motors was simply not accurate. It was closer to 7.7:1.
Here's how I would build it:
1. Port the heads. (optional, but it helps these heads a lot)
2. 4 barrel iron intake, Holley 600cfm carburetor
3. Crane 343901 cam (260/272 degree dual pattern)
4. Headers. This is a must for any performance at all. The stock exhaust manifolds on these motors are probably the worst design ever.
5. The above mentioned Silvolite 3137 pistons.
Built up like that, according to Desktop Dyno, it should make around 354hp @ 5000rpm, and 399ft-lbs @ 4000rpm. That torque curve is very flat, with 372ft-lbs @ 2000rpm.
