I just saw my next project: a 65 shortbed. It's been sitting in the same spot for who knows how long, it has 4 flats, and some kind of rundown campershell in the back (it's a fleetside). I'm gonna go in the next few days to make an offer.
I had a '66 a while back, but I regrettably sold it.
Anyway, my 66 was in real good shape, almost no rust, so I really don't know where to look for common rust. Anyone here know the common places for rust?
Well my advice look high and low for rust i dont know the common places but even if there is common places there could still be rust in the none common places just my opinion
I just bought a 66 f100 a few weeks ago. The whole thing is solid except the inner fender wel right next to where the hood hinges bolt on. The first places I would look would defenitly be the cab corners,The cab supports, rocker panels, the body mounting areas,& the floor underneath the rubber matting or whatever carpeting might be in the truck. I would pull that up as far as I can & try to see the whole floor. That's just my .02 cents.
Roof perimeter around the drip rails, cab mounts, floors, leading edge of bed floor, rear crossmember under cab floor, radiator support at outer bottom ends, inner fenders near hood hinges, bottom of door hinge posts, leading edge of hood.
Almost every slick I look at has rust through the interior kick panel just below the vent door. It seems leaves go down through the cowl vent and end up at the bottom leaving a soggy mess that eventually rusts through.
I also find rust under the rubber mat up against the kick panel.
Just went and talked to the owner today! I looked at the truck and guess what? No major rust!! The flaws are these: 1. Very minor rust in the floorboard (very minor) 2. A dent in the passenger side of the bed that is small and easy to fix and 3. It hasn't ran in 3 years.
It has the 352/3sp column combo, and did I mention it's a shortbed!!
The 2 things I dont like 1. it's not a custom cab, and 2. the bumpers and grill are paintmatched white, not chrome and aluminum.
I still want the truck, so wish me luck that I get a good deal.
Dave, good luck on the '65. The box style is referred to as "Styleside" by ford. The Fleetside is the marketing name for that other truck. You have the makings of a very nice truck. There is an opportunity to have a monochromatic paint job which is very much in vogue today. You won't have to strip the trim because there isn't any and the bumpers and grill will blast up nicely and accept paint readily. I saw a '66 the other day that was all burnt orange and lowered a little with nice rims and tires that was a real head turner. Go for it. Steve
I know it's been awile since this thread has been active, but I thought I would update. I finally talked to the owners about three days ago, and they are mighty proud of that truck. They want $2000 firm. No remember, it hasn't ran it at least 3 years, it has 4 flat tires, in addition the the normal wear and tear for a 41 year old truck. The first one I had (a '66) had a 428 in it, ran great, had tires in good shape and needed no bodywork, and I used it as a daily driver for quite a while. I paid $1000 for it. So, needless to say, I don't have another '65. Bummer
Offer them $1,500 anyway. After all, it hasn't run in years and has 4 flat tires. Even if they say no, keep checking back every few weeks. You'll get it eventually!
Do yourself a favor and double check the radiator support! On the 66 I bought the passenger side secrtion of the support that attached to the frame was GONE from rust!

The truck's been sitting for years with flat tires? What's there to be proud of, LOL!?
I'm not hatin' a hurtin' slick. Nor am I railing against owners who have trucks in various stages of restoration or use. But this is one of those cases of an owner who clearly doesn't care enough about their vehicle to even maintain it, yet still thinks it's worth a small fortune. Ugh.
