97 with 5 speed zf trans. luk flywheel conversion kit (dual to single mass). never noticed this problem before, but maybe i just wasn't paying attention to it..who knows. first gear and second gear shake the steering wheel when aking off, if you ***** foot it...it's smooth. this has been there for...10-12000 miles though. main problem for this post is as follows. 4th gear abotu 1300 rpm.....floor it from there and let it boost and work it's way up; doesnt "shake" but it "hickups" sorta (possibly clutch letting loose??!?) then above about 1800 rpm, it's smooth and fine!? trucks is smooth between 1300 and 1800 but every now and then maybe 2 or 3 times, sorta "miss". i dont believe it's engine bcause it doesnt do it any other time. moving along to 5th gear, all seems ok here. still has "hickup" slightly, but not as noticable?! i looked at clutch from inspection cover, i have about 1/8 inch on each side.
any suggestions or thoughts?
ps, this "hickup" is not violent at all, just enough to notice and shake a TAD bit.
I'm curious what you find out as I'm about to replace my clutch and transmission. i was thinking of using the Luk solid mass, quick side question, did they have to upgrade your slave cylinder or master cylinder to install your luk clutch?
as far as i can SEE ...i BELIEVE the slave and master are stock equipment. i know this truck has had water injection and everything else to test out and play with, so prolly 450-500hp and over 1000 ft lbs torque. (it's the 97' hypermax used to own, my dad works there) but what im getting at here is that it's help up for all that power, so the clutch has been/is a godo clutch for me. i have stage 1's now so it's a drivable vehicle, but still i havee never had problems, this problem may not even be teh clutch, im not really sure, i just wanted to see if anybody else had suggestiong!?
Sounds like it could be the clutch. If you over heat the clutch enugh times the friction surface will glaze similar to a brake pad. This will give the truck a very noticable shudder as it engages, and it may also buck a little as the revs come up.
