ok i got this 84 f-250 with a 460 body is nice but it needs some good sound what would you guys do concerning mufflers? glasspacks are they street legal? i want noise but not a massive amount of it! i think glass packs might be the way to go considering that im buying a do it yourself kit because the truck is too old to buy a certain kit for it. So im thinkin of going for a universal kit but it needs mufflers. what would ya'll do?
Glasspacks are good, they blow out over time but it's not the worst thing out there.
You want a single or dual exhaust? If you choose an actual muffler, Flowmaster is loud, Magnaflow is quieter (noticable though). Glasspacks come in many many brands, and will change the sound depending on the length.
What kinda sound you want? Deep, raspy? Loud, quiet? Want tips or not? Dual or single exit?
its gonna be a dual side exit exhaust. with tips and i want it deep a nice rumble would be nice i dont want it ridiculosly loud but loud would be nice. how often do glasspacks blow out?
It takes a while...you won't notice probably. Not often enough to push you away from them.
Dual on the same side, i.e. Lightning style?
I'd suggest, if you want Lightning style with a deep tone, I'd suggest actually doing two glasspacks on the driver's side, then putting bends in the pipes to point them to the exit on the passenger side (wherever you want that to be), and use the longest tips you can find (as that's what makes the deep tone on top of the muffler's sound).
its more like seprate system where its dual and its a true dual. i want the left side engine cylinders to exit outta the left side of the truck and the right side cylinders to exit out of the right side of the truck. i want long tips but i also wanna save money what i got figured out right now is a universal kit from Jegs which will be 3" or 2.5" depending upon the mufflers i get. i think right now im pretty set on the 2.5" system with dynomax glassack mufflers which are 23" i wanna get two one for each side and then have one exit out one side and one exit out of the other. do you think this would get the sound quality that i want i also would like to make the system in a way to decrease the most back pressure possible in that way it would get a lil bit better gas mileage right now ive been getting about 8 so thats the whole reasoning behind doing this. but most of all i want good sound ik with a big block it shouldent be too hard
My brother had a manifold-back exhaust done on his '89 F-350 with a 460, the guy ran dual 2.5", no cats but it has a crossover, two Flowmaster Super 40s, and ran the pipes over the axle although they basically just go over the axle and dump out behind it. Sounds really good, but when you're driving and the engine is constantly around 2000 rpm or so, the drone can get a bit annoying.
Oh one other thing, if your truck is a 4x4 and you're looking at the universal kit that I think you probably are, it won't fit. We tried that one on my one brother's '84 F-150 and the gas tank is in the way of the driver's side pipe.
