Automatic in the bush

I have always had a manual transmision on trucks i have owned, reason being that they are easier on fuel and if you park on a hill you can always start it by popping the clutch.

My recent truck is a 79 250 4x4 with C6 auto trannie. Is it possible to get out of trouble if the starter dies in the same way?? any thought would be appreciated. Thanks.
