2000 for ranger
Well, read through the link I posted above, it has in it, the proceedure for replacing the multifunction switch.
If you still don't feel comfortable doing it, seems to me you then have about 4 or 5 choices.
1) Leave things the way they are. (not safe)
2) Have the Dealer do it.( around here, Ford Dealers warranty their work for as long as you own the vehicle) a good deal!!!!
3) Have someone else do the labor & you supply the switch, or let them supply it.
4) You try, using a new switch, or less desireable, you doing it, with a salvage switch.
It could have the same defects as the recall switches, UNLESS you can find something made after 00, with low miles on it & covered, so the weather hasn't gotten to it, then the salvage switch might be ok & I'll bet the price would be too!!!!
5) But if I were going to try doing it, I'd probably just spring for a new switch & try it myself. If it then looked to be too much for me, hire out the labor for someone else to do it.
Just some thoughts to ponder.
