Have an 04 SD V-10 with 4X4 with 3.73 axels. I am looking at a 5th wheel toyhauler which will weigh in at about 13K and need to change out the axels to accommodate the weight. Should I put in the 4.30's or just go with the 4.56's?
First off, welcome to FTE. The best Ford truck forum on the 'net!
What diameter tires do you have? Is this a F-350 DRW? 13K would be quite a load for a F-250. Watch the pin weight, could easily bust your GVWR in a 250.
The tire size is stock. I realize it is at the top end of the weight limit for hauling but where I live it is very flat, dont anticipate any hills/mountains at least until such time as I can afford a bigger truck. I dont drive enough miles to justify the added expense of a diesel and they can be a pita here in the winter. The V-10 will do (just about) anything a diesel will do. Plus I only paid 16K for this 04 with 75K miles on it, so I am money ahead just changing out the axels.
I just did it, and went with the 4:30 . I now can tow in OD very easily. I am reving 2250 rpm at about 60mph. its perfect and I tow a 33' 5th thats around 10500lbs . I was very pleased. Ford manual for my 2000 V10 says 17000 gcvw vs 20000 for the 4:30 ratio . so it was an easy 3000lb gain. No regrets, stay standard tire size if you can! You may want to program the tranny for firm shifts with a chip, it really helps when towing. good luck

Reason: incomplete
do the math....3.73 >
+400rpm to 4.10s
+200rpm to 4.30s
+200rpm to 4.56s....now thats screaming
you should have bought a deisel lol
That is almost funny right there. If you owned a V10 you'd know that.
You need to realize that the V10 has 5400 RPMS to play with and and that is just to the rev limiter. It's built to handle 6K. While those RPMS would make the diesel cry, it's just waking up the V10.
Aside from the silly gas vs. diesel thing.....
How often and how far are you planning on towing? If it's just randomly, a few times a year, get the 4.30's. You'll actually be surprised that your fuel mileage stay about the same as it is with the 3.73's. Nice if it is also your DD.
If you are gonna tow often, heavy, or up lots of slopes, get the 4.56's. I ran 4.56's in my '04 and wish I had gone to 4.88's.
You have tons of room to play with in the RPM range and that V10 will soak it right up. Don't sweat the RPM's in that puppy.
Also, try the V10 forum for a slightly less heated debate.

also, With 4:30 gears, when you drop to 3rd gear on mild grade, 60mph is no problem,
The 5.4 and 6.8 are pretty much similar, except in the bottom end. They both run in the same RPM range and need a few revs to make good power.
Obviously, you won't get the same power output as the V10, but it stills needs to run in the same range.
So, short answer, YES, 4.30's would be great in the 5.4.
But you do have to consider your uses. Do you plan on bigger tires? Bigger trailer? Etc?
If yes, then you would want to look at 4.56's or higher.
In my case, even on the V10, I was running 36" tires and pulled a trailer. Be it a little 4-5K (loaded) trailer, it still would hunt for gears on fairly small grades with the 4.56's. For me 4.88's would have been perfect.
Try this link, it may help you out. This is fairly simple way to figure what you need. Whatever you come up with, do yourself a favor and go one numerically higher.
I agree with the 4.30's. I changed mine over from the 3.73's to 4.30's and are extemely happy with them. Plenty of torque and still a little money left in your pockets when you leave the gas station.
Flat land hmm where ya located?
I do gears and I'm fixin to put 4.56's in my 07 it has 4.10 now.
My truck came with 34in tires, by all means it should have also came with 4.30 gears.
Anyway seeing how your asking, I say go with 4.56 if it's to much a taller set of
tires will make it look better and you can fine tune the gearing with your tire size.
Then again you may like it with your stock tires?

I drive a 100% stock 5.4 2wd SC F250 with 3.73 gears. I'm looking for a little more torque without killing gas mileage. I was seriously considering going to 4.10's but would prefer the 4.30's.
