Which Torque converter is a good one to use on my 2 wheel drive dually? This is my first diesel and I dont know but are the bolt holes different from the diesel to the gas burners? Its the tough C6 and there are plenty of TQ Conv, for them.
Mine bit the dust yesterday. Its been making noise for a couple days and now it wont move. I can put the truck in gear (86 F350 Dually) and you feel it take gear but it wont move if you rev it high it tries but wont. I towed it home and could feel it shift while changing gears manually. If I leave the truck in park/neutral with it idleing it shakes really bad but once I put it in gear it smooths out the shake. I believe the internals failed on me. Ill be pulling it this week to get a better look.
Thanks
Make sure the trans is actually in the gear selected at the MLPS, when was last time you adjusted the bands. Check my back posts for linkage adjustment info and band adjustment info.
Tried the Band adjustment yesterday with no difference. I removed the pan and it looks pretty good other than the normal metallic film on the bottom of the pan. Nothing drastic but when you hold it sideways and let if run down you see the metallic, which has been common from what I remember. Anyway Im going to go ahead and pull it then do a complete rebuild with Atco/transgo and B&M parts, that way I know what I got when Im towing my car trailer on the interstate. Thanks for the advise.
I just about have the transmission out, 2 bolts on the bottom and one starter bolt. I also havent gotten the darn shifter linkage removed. Whats the trick with that, it dont want to come out. Does it just pop out? Thanks
You can also use a screw driver to pry them apart. I am in the middle of replaceing the c6 in my 89 f350. I have a donor 88 f250 with the same set up on the ground. While I am at it I am dropping the banks turbo in as well. As far as the tourqe converter goes, get the lowest stall converter you can for it. Diesels make their money at the other end of the RPM gauge than gassers (where higher stall is better). Please tell me your at least doing this in a shop, not in the driveway........like me.
Well im actually doing this in my driveway since this truck wont fit in my 2 car garage. Ill be doing the rebuild on my shop bench but I got to lay on the drive way to pull it out.
Some day my truck will fit in the shop.... some day. Till then, I have done more layin out in the snow, rain, heat and gloom of night than I want to remember....maybe I should be a postal worker......(helps when you have a 55gal drum you can build a fire in so you don't freeze).
So anyway, I hope it is not raining saturday or sunday (so I can finish the tranny swap) Here is to good weather.
The trans linkage is held by a kind of o-ring grommet, you just pop it out with a screwdriver or prybar. If it happens to tear, it is replaceable. Kand be a real sob sometimes, but they do just pop out and back in again later...
Im not going to rebuild it now, Ill just put in a new TQ converter new filter and modulator with some fresh fluid. This should do me till I get ready to do a 5 speed swap on it.
Got it back on the road today, I put in the new converter and filter. I also pulled the valve body and cleaned it before putting it all back together. Ive put about 40 miles on it today and it feels better than before.
