I have oil on my bell housing. There is oil on my starter and it also seems to be coming from a little black cover on the bell housing. Could it be a RMS leak? There is oil on and around my CMP sensor bolt. I also noticed a crack in my alum. CAC tube, could that cause oil to drip on my starter?
You didn't say what year and model truck you had but, there are several areas an oil leak can occur. Take it to the dealer have them put dye in the oil then drive it for about a week take it back in and the tech can use a black light to detect where the leak is coming from.
it is a 2004 f250, it was made in 2003. I did bring it to my dealer, it first had icp sensor leak and it was fixed. A couple of days went by it started leaking oil again brought it back in and it did have dye in it, they said it was not oil is was assembly grease they used when they installed the re-installed turbo after the icp leak. I have never heard of such a thing.
Dye in the oil is still the best way to find an oil leak. Clean off all the oil and see if the leak comes back. If it does take it back to the dealer and tell them to find it and fix it. If the dealer can't or won't fix the leak then find a new dealer with a better diesel tech.
i would deffinitly check out the other stuff, but the oil on the bell housing is pretty normal. every 6.0 (between my friends and mine) that ive seen has some oil on the bell housing. but usually it just sits there, as long as its not dripping your ok
I've heard there was an exess amount of grease used for a while when the trans. was fitted to the torque converter. When the motor heats up the grease melts down to the bell housing and out the weep hole. It looks like an oil leak, but it is not. Just a thought. That would explain not seeing it with the black light.
Mine leak was just like RLAWNS discribed and it was the RMS. I just got mine back and they also fixed the EGR it had some kind of antifreeze leak and repaled the blower motor. They fixed it all in 29 hour. I was very happy!

Thank Rick
These trucks leak from any of 10-13 common locations. Good luck getting yours fixed, there is a reason why they are called 6.0 leakers.
Mine went in yesterday for the 3rd time (oil leak);
1st trip RMS was replaced
2nd trip Front Cover
3rd time so far they have replaced Glow Plug Harness and are still working on it.
I think I will remane my truck "The Exxon Valdiz"

My truck has had several leaks from day one. I actually have an appointment this week to get the latest leak fixed.
I just tell my friends that Ford mistakenly gave me the Harley edition.

Fieldday,
How many miles does it usually take before all the grease melts? I have 42,000 miles on it.
My grease melted off thefirst week. there was a couple of table spoons of the stuff on my driveway. It looked alot difernt than oil, more like assembly lube.
