its mostly about personal preferance myself i would pull the bed. if you have a way to pull it off than i would go for it because trying to drop the tank is not fun from under the truck but you still have to go under and take the bed bolts off i think there are 6. your most likley going to have to cut atleast a few if not all because of the stupid carage bolts they use when i put mine back in i used regular hex bolts. so either way you are going to get some dirt on your face theres no way around it. the bed is not to heavy but its really akward to lift so if you have 3 other people its nice and simple. i used so saw horses and boards t0take mine off by myself.(i can only imagine what the neighbors were thinkin that lol)

If you are swapping out the tank, it has to come out the bottom.
Unhooking the fuel lines and gauge wires are a pain from the bottom, and there will be a lot of dirt on the tank and skid plate. But it has to come down even after the bed is off.

4 bolts and the fuel lines and fill hose, and it is out, really not that big a deal, and as Dave stated, for actual removal of the tank, it still goes out the bottom, even with the box off. I've dropped so many tanks over the years betwen cars and trucks, it really isn't that bad. My assessment is that most people make more of it than it really is. As long as you don't have an ag bumper like mine that sticks under the tank, it is pretty simple to drop it.

Or a big hitch reciever like I have, it has to come off before the tank will come down.
I think the rear tank is the hardest, the cross members are in the way when trying to unhook the fuel lines.

I usually drop it down a bit before unhooking the lines. If at all possible, the tank needs to be drained as much as you can. If not, either have some help or use a floor jack with a 2x12 or such on it to help a bit. You will want to drain the tank before putting it back up.
