hey, there are casting numbers on every head correct? i have a 351m / 400 and i need to find out what exactly it is so i can order parts and get it ready to install.
Hey Matt, if you need any help, pop me an email. Also, I have two extra 400s here at the house in various states of disrepair if you need some parts. What is the 400 going into, the ranger? lol.
its in plainville.... gonna be a simple swap. ive had that motor out prolly 4 times. everything will bolt off old motor onto new motor. change the pan and valve cover seals and intake and bam should run. i havnt compression tested the motor yet so im going to do that this weekend. i need to see what it is so i can order parts
Matt, where did you get those casting numbers on the head. I just checked the head from the 400 that came out of my 78 Bronco and the casting number on the head under the valve cover is D5ae a-2a. That would correspond to a '75 style casting. I was too lazy to pull the valve cover on the heads in the truck that came off a '70 or '71 400 out of a car, but I would guess that they probably have a cast something like D0ae or D0ve etc. There was also a 8G12 cast into the head on the D5AE head. That is probably a number corresponding to the date cast etc. Others may have better info.
D5ae a-2a. That would correspond to a '75 style casting.

Sorry, That relates to the design Number for the part.
D5AE = Engine designed for 1975 Large Ford car.
The last 2 digits are the part design change-up codes.
The 2A tells me it was changed quite a few times.
The date of casting is the 3 or 4 digit number he posted
6m21
December 21st 1976
Now since the 351M was first designed and placed in the 75 Ford cars
I believe the engine is a 351M.

again: a part cast on July 12th /1978 of a 1975 Engine design for a large ford car.
1978 351M.
*NOTE: A 1978 Truck 400 would be cast with a D7TE-A
as the 400 was re-designed and introduced in 1977 Truck.
A 72 400 would have been cast
D1AE-A

The casting D0VE-A would be an engine designed for a 1970 Lincoln (ie: 460)
Casting D0AE-A would be an engine designed for a 1970 Large Ford Car.
