... guess I should also throw my 2 Euro Cents in here.

I live in a country which is (partialy) ruled by the Green Party (they are in a coalition with the leading Socialists).

Waste and getting rid of waste as well as environmental stuff is at the max over here.

Washing your car in the driveway is almost illegal. Washing your engine or any oily stuff is already illegal since many years. You have to have an oil-separator (which splits the oil from the water before it goes into the drain) ....

Whenever you buy a new battery you have to bring an old one. Otherwise they charge you $7.50 core charge. NOt that they use the batteries again. NO. They just want to make sure the old ones don't end up in the fields or normal trash or ...

... the list goes on and on.

Even so painful I really do not disagree with this.

So, what advantage does phosphoric acid have over muriatic acid? Is it that it leaves a protective phosphate coating on the steel? Or is it that you can dilute it down and use it to flavour cola drinks when you're done with it?

There's a lot of forgotten toxic sites out there: Someone once told me that when he worked in a scrapyard, they would dump PCB transformer oil around the yard to keep the dust down.

Try calling your sewer dept. or sanitation dept. and see if they have any way to dispose of the stuff. Our sewer dept. has an annual household hazardous waste roundup.

To neutralize Muriatic/HydroChloric/HCl acid waste dilute some Red Devil lye (Sodium Hydroxide, NaOH) in water and carefully add that to the HCl acid waste; HCl + NaOH = H2O + NaCl (water and table salt). The waste will also contain some other salts such as Iron salts, Aluminum salts, etc. Unless there's a lot of lead in the waste, this stuff is pretty safe.

To dispose of antifreeze, pour it into your local sewer system. Both Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol are digested in the sewer system's water treatment plant quite nicely. I learned this from a HazMat specialist who had a PhD in chemistry so the source is well qualified. FYI, you eat Propylene Glycol pretty regularly. It's in some salad dressings, ice cream and other foods.

Please recycle motor oil. All of the local parts store will take waste motor oil and they're quite nice about it.

I've heard that Muriatic Acid can cause Hydrogen embrittlement in steel.

For restoring rusty parts I like to use a product called Red-B-Gone. I put about1/4 lb in a large plastic trash can over night. Violla! It's clean. the resulting brown clean-up mix is then poured on the lawn. I don't know what's in it but it seems mild and does not have all the warning labels of acids. John
