i own a 2000 F-250 w/ 6 in lift and 35 inch BFG's. I went off-roading in the truck and ran it through the mud. I now hear a squeeking noise coming from the wheels. I rotated the tires to check the brakes and see how much it has worn. The pads have not yet made contact with the metal sensor. I don't know where the squeeking is coming from. Could I have dust in the brake pads. I am really confused my brakes are fine.
If you can try and isolate the squeak area (front or back). But my Dad has a '01 F250 SD CC 4x4 ESOF and he had the weirdest squeak. We thought it was the bushings from the springs in the front. Turned out it were his ball joints. Replaced the ball joints...and the squeak is gone.
Highboy390fe,
The squeeks occurs only when the Truck is in motion. I do not brake and the truck still makes the noise from the wheels. I do take the truck off-road alot. It sounds like their is mud in the rotors. Do you think adding some brake cleaner will help out the problem. I will take a look at those ball joints and bearings.
Sometimes a small piece of rock can get embedded into one of the pads. Since the pads are always in contact with the rotor, they can squeak even when not applying the brakes. However, if that is the case, you should see a slight groove or scar on the rotor, where the rock would be making contact with it.
I would recommend checking the rotors and bearings and ball joints while your in there. It sounds like you got some sand or small rocks maybe caught in there somewhere they shouldnt be.
Sometimes it can be hard to detect from where excatly the sound is coming from if you are in the drivers seat with the truck running. I had this problem with mine - i had someone else roll (drive) the truck in an empty, sloped parking lot and i walked to each wheel to detect where the noise was coming from. Mine was brake pads. Hope it helps!
was the axles submerged in the mud/water?You might have water/grit that has gotten into the bearings(needle). If so you can service them.If it turns out to be the main sealed bearings, the unit bearing needs to be replaced, very expensive.
Pimt1ton right on the money on the incline to determine where the squeak is coming from. And go from there.............
Yes, i did replace them and the noise did go away - mine was a grinding noise, not a squeak. It was obvious i needed pads also after pulling the tire/wheel off.
I would have to say though that your situation with the lift / tires and the timing of the noise starting (after going off road) i would look hard at what everybody above said too!
Some fellows will say for squeeky brakes, the problem may lie in the rotors - if they are glazed, take some emery cloth and rough the surface up and put the assembly back together. That leads me to another idea. Does the squeek happen all 360 degrees of the spinning of the tires? Maybe your rotors are warped. My wifes Excursion had the rotors warped two times - mostly her bad driving habit but irregardless, you might want to check that out if the noise is not constant.
That is weird. Maybe you should take it for a brake inspection at a professional shop. I've heard on the radio sometimes companies saying they will do it for free. Just be ready, they will usually find something that they say needs fixed on your vehicle. Let them know up front you need help on finding the source of the noise. Good luck.
I would be interested in what you find out. My truck does this time to time. Usually after I leave the jobsite after a rain and I have been in the mud and picked up some gravel. First time with under 50 miles on the odometer. Now I have 1000 miles on it. Happens once a week or so. Sounds like a rock in the brakes. Usually goes away within a couple of miles. I have checked the rotors and no scratches are noticable. It is usually just one wheel or the other. Always one of the fronts. Hmmm...
