I'm getting near the point where I will need to start ordering replacement parts for my truck. I plan on restoring it to stock condition. My quetion concerns the type of replacement parts that can go into our old trucks. Keep in mind I am not attempting a Dearborn registry quality restoration but I do want to replace stock parts with stock parts. There are a lot of companies out there dealing in NOS parts and reproduction parts. Also, I know places like NAPA and CarQuest can look up parts if you supply them with the Ford number. Are these considered authentic?
Now, if I were to go to the F-100 SuperNationals and enter my truck in the stock class, will they deduct points for using non-FoMoCo parts even though they are identical replacements in form and function? Would somebody be crawling under my truck and checking the origin of my tie rod ends or universal joints? I'm pretty ignorant of how the judging operates at shows but I do need to take it into consideration.
I've also read up on several different chassis painting techniques. Is one more correct for stock restoration than another? It would be quicker to knock the rust off and slap some POR15 or Zero Rust on it as opposed to sandblasting it and priming/painting it. I only plan to do this once so I won't mind expending a little extra time and effort if I can justify it. I plan on mainly attending small, informal shows and parades but I would like to attend SuperNats, as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Yes!
Judged on the 'stats work being done out there that shows a majority (?) of stocker builders out there (although quiet vs. the nattering cut/weld/bend/cuss hot-rodders), we need some of those basic show guidelines.
Im building the Cruiser as much more of a weekend chore/parts chaser but it sure helps to know what the target is before we build the heater box back with brand X hardware!
It depends on the part. If its sheet metal, there's usually nothing to look for. However, some sheet metal has Ford stamped on the underside and they may look for this. Taillamps, etc., yes they will look for the Ford logo. There's nothing that says you have to use stock.... however it has to look exact as stock, including logos. Some judges have been known to go so far as nitpicking the wrong overspray pattern!
I picked up the book "How to Restore Your Ford Pickup" and they described things like making sure you get the weather stripping seam back in the same place.
Since my truck came from the original owner, I think most of it is original. I think the taillights were replaced since they have shield type lenses and I think '53 came with round lenses. Is there a resource somewhere that desribes things like that? Perhaps a governing body with a rule book? These judges have to start somewhere, right?
The Supernationals are participant judged. You recieve a ballot when you enter and can vote as you please. I was sitting in front of a gentleman several years who got a top 20 (10?). His truck was sitting home in the garage!
