Old school RCA Victor

My mother has an old school RCA Victor 'entertainment center'. I dont know exactly how old it is, but it was her parents. The TV has a green colored screen, and it IS color, but a very washed out color. It also has a record player and a stereo. The thing must be about 8' wide, with the tv in the middle, the rest is all solid wood. She has to get rid of it because its in the way, so i figured i would take it. I have no idea if its worth anything at all because its old...it is fully operational though. The wife says its 'junk' and we dont need it. Does anyone have any idea if its worth anything?

I had one from the late 40's that I got when cleaning out a barn. I tried selling it on Ebay,Craigslist, and a yard sale but no one wanted it.. Unless it is a rare model or in exceptional condition and you can show them it still works, it is not worth much..

Mine had the TV, 2 record players (45's & 78's), and radio in a nice cabinet.
I can send you a picture if you want to see it.

I finally got rid of it by leaving it out on the street after the yard sale and someone took it...

Thats so wierd.....ive seen them on ebay, not bringing much money. I have no idea why. You take a piece of furniture from that age and it sells for hundreds of dollars. Stuff a TV and stereo in it, and its worthless??

They don't bring much in Canadian money either.

Check with an antique store to see if they are interested in it

or

Tell her you will remove the TV and make it a Liquor cabinet

I am not anywhere near an expert in this kind of stuff, but I do have some interest in old radios and TVs...

That looks like a pretty old set. The tube shape makes me think the 1950s. 1960s screens were usually more square.

Unfortunately the set is not in good condition so it is probably worth little as is. If it was in good condition it might be worth more. It also seems like there are two record players, one on top of the amp? I would think that is odd and maybe not factory original.

There is a small bunch of collectors out there who pay big bucks for vintage radios. I have seen prices of thousands of dollars for some radios, but they are very old and special. Maybe there are similar people who collect TVs. You might do a web search for vacuum tube television and see if any clubs or websites like the Ford Truck site show up.

The cabinet seems a bit odd. Most of the combo TV/Stereos I have seen were in a side by side configuration in a low cabinet. This one almost looks like an old dresser/amoire converted to hold the TV and Stereo. If it is a conversion then there is probably little value. If there are any manufacturer labels or markings, that will greatly help determine if this is original and helps the value if authentic.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

We used to have something similar, but I think it was a Muntz.

It had a record (LP) storage on the left, and combo radio/phonograph player on the right side, and a television screen in the middle.

I'd gut the unit and turn it into some sort of cabinet for..........................

I've always wanted to find something like that and update it with modern equipment. A flat panel tv and a modern stereo inside the old style cabinet would be something you don't often see.

That console appears to be a 1950 model. If it has a model number on it, you could
check it at www.tvhistory.tv/1950-59-rca.htm . the model number should be on a
paper label with the brand logo on it. There are few sources for pictures to i.d. a
particular model. I collect table model radios from about the same time frame.

You might want to peruse this site:
http://www.earlytelevision.org/

You might find something very close to what you have.
Some of these old sets (in good or restored condition) are fetching quite large sums of money!

IHTH.

Generally, the only old TV's that are fetching money are the real early ones (first models made), such as with a round pic tube or the pic tube mounted on that goofy horseshoe shaped hanger. You might consider trying to find someone interested in converting that cabinet into a wine cabinet/wine storage; that's about the only use I've heard of for the things. Like computers, old TV's seem to be a technology product that get's obsoleted by better equipment. Not quite the same deal on pre WWII radios, especially ones without big bulky cabinets.
